I was uncertain about the direction the author would take in Book 4 following the resolution of some loose ends in Sin and Salvation. However, I’m thrilled to say that this fantastic series has introduced a whole new captivating web of intrigue. If you haven’t read the previous three books, beware of slight spoilers below (and if you haven’t, what are you waiting for???). I must emphasize that reading the preceding books is necessary since these stories are not standalone, although some background information is repeated due to the short time between releases.

At the end of Book 3, Magnus was contemplating Lexi’s situation, and Sin and Spirit escalates the action as enemies surround Lexi and Kieran from all angles. Lexi’s secret as a Spirit Walker is now widely known, causing trouble and disrupting her plans for a harmonious life. As the girlfriend of a resident Demigod, she unwillingly finds herself thrust into the spotlight, subjected to judgment and scrutiny in every aspect of her life. Lexi struggles to balance her post-Valens existence with her sudden rise in society. Aware that her rare magic makes her highly sought after, and knowing that previous Spirit Walkers faced lives bordering on slavery, Alexis is forced to take extreme measures to find a qualified individual who can train her. Venturing into the spirit realm, she manages to locate the best candidate, but can she trust him and his unorthodox methods? On top of that, the Hades Demigods are hatching their own nefarious plans to capture Lexi, potentially using her or even ending her life. This puts Lexi’s life and the lives of those she loves in grave danger, as the team finds themselves under constant attack. The heightened peril adds an excellent dimension to the narrative, ensuring that everything isn’t always sunshine and roses.

This book offers a little bit of everything—suspense, action, magic, humor, romance, and steam. Breene has masterfully assembled a remarkable cast of characters, making it feel like catching up with old friends with each new installment. However, I must caution you that there are heart-wrenching moments in this book that surpass its predecessors, as Lexi’s loved ones find themselves in harm’s way and tragedy strikes unexpectedly. Thankfully, the author’s signature humor and sarcasm are present throughout, providing a much-needed highlight. Despite the expectation that some of the sassy and strong personalities of certain characters might become grating over time, they remain engaging. Additionally, a few new characters are introduced, and the familiar faces of The Six, along with Dairy and Mordecai, continue to delight readers. Nevertheless, be prepared for some angst in this book, which I felt added another layer to the story. And let’s not forget the cat with a borderline evil nature, whose presence brings forth great humor—a personal delight, especially since I’m on Team Cat.

Now, regarding our favorite couple? Honestly, I adore Lexi. She strikes a fantastic balance between vulnerability, naivety, self-doubt, and inner strength. Although these characteristics may seem contradictory, they blend seamlessly. I appreciate how Breene has taken readers on Lexi’s journey, as she grapples with learning and mastering her unique brand of magic while endeavoring to protect those she loves and maintain a somewhat “normal” life. Lexi’s occasional uncertainty and keen awareness of her perceived flaws and weaknesses make her a relatable and authentic character, which is one of the series’ most appealing aspects.

As for Kieran? Goodness gracious, he becomes even more captivating with each passing book. I hesitate to describe men as “dreamy,” but he truly is a joy to read about. And for those who enjoy possessive alpha male characters, Kieran fits the bill perfectly without becoming obnoxious. The pages are also infused with a suitable amount of steam, accompanied by cheeky and enticing dirty talk from Kieran, who seems determined to be one of the best book boyfriends ever.

We are treated to snippets from Daisy’s and Magnus’s perspectives as well, which I found thoroughly enjoyable. While I had hoped for the Demigod summit or for Lexi to meet her father in this installment, those events have yet to occur. This means there are still plenty of fireworks to come. However, I must leave a note for Breene: Lexi better overcome her dislike of cats. You do NOT want an angry group of cat lovers confronting you.

Overall, this book was another gem of a read. Unlike the previous installments, there were several moments that left me feeling genuinely sad. Nevertheless, it was once again a pleasure to accompany Lexi as she delves deeper into her powers and witnesses her relationship with Kieran grow stronger. As with all of Breene’s series, there is a bittersweet note at the end. While I adore reading these books, the agonizing wait for the next one leaves me in despair. I’m already counting down the days until Sin and Lightning. Sigh.

This book is a stunning and exhilarating read that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I absolutely adore the love shared between the characters, as well as their strong bonds of family and friendship. The magical elements are expertly woven into the story, and the writing itself is splendid. It’s so captivating that I find myself unable to put the book down, even though I’m trying to savor the stories and not rush through them too quickly.

Audio Sin and Spirit narrated by Khristine Hvam

I’m a big fan of the slapstick humor in this book. The world building is impressive, and despite my initial reservations about the use of Greek gods, I’m actually finding it incredibly enjoyable. In fact, I’m so hooked that I’m bingeing the entire series this week.
