This book picks up at the end of Cold Lake. David Wolf is confined to home while he attempts to recover from the massive injuries incurred during his near-fatal drop off a cliff. The attempt to come to grips with the murder of his ex-wife adds even more pressure. He resigns from the sheriff campaign and basically withdraws into alcohol/drug-induced dreams.

When Wolf finally begins to move around, he realizes hes being watched by the FBI. He calls the only person he knows who may be able to tell him why, Special Agent Kristen Luke. Instead of a normal answer, Agent Lukes phone simply clicks on and he can overhear a conversation then his name. The Sluice-Byron Sheriffs Department has received an anonymous tip stating that Wolf killed his wife and is tied in with a drug cartel operating in the area. As proof, the caller tells them where to find the murder weapon. Already caught up in some suspicious murders and odd behavior of fellow agents, Luke warns Wolf to run because he can easily be murdered in jail.

From this point forward, the story picks up a frantic pace. Luke joins Wolf on his run for freedom and puts her life and career on the line to help him.

Smoked Out audiobook in series David Wolf

Although I read the previous books in the David Wolf series, its been over two years since I read book five, Cold Lake. While I enjoy reading a series with characters that become more developed in each book, I like having a full and unique storyline in each too.

In this case, this is merely a continuation of book five and there is no additional character development. The reader is expected to know the backstories of the characters and the crimes. If one doesnt remember the details from previous book, the story becomes a tedious read. It is definitely not a stand alone book.

Audiobook Smoked Out by Jeff Carson

The sixth book in this series starts where Cold Lake left off. Former Sluice County Sheriff David Wolf is recuperating from his many injuries. It is now SluiceByron Sheriffs Department and MacLean is the new sheriff. The FBI has searched his house and are surrounding his property, watching him. Wolf must escape a trap being set for him and search for the answer to one question…

Special Agent Kristen Luke of the FBI is playing a dangerous game and risking her career… Wolf gets help from unexpected places… The trail leads across the mountains and back…

The description of the new combined SBCSD department was so good I have a visual in mind. This was a fast-paced story with lots of action. I was immersed in the book from the beginning after COLD LAKE, I wanted to see what Wolf would do next. There were twists and turns and surprises aplenty. This is another one of those page-turners I read straight through because I had to know what was going to happen. I never suspected the guilty party, so the big reveal was a shocker! I very much enjoyed the last chapter…

Audio Smoked Out narrated by Sean Patrick Hopkins

I had read the previous book, Cold Lake, and when I bought this book I was wondering if this one could fill the shoes of the last one. I would be lying if I told that this isn’t an amazing book. It is very well written, filled with details that bring you into the story, and it’s just all around a very good story. The story comes with a lot of suspense, it keeps you guessing and wondering, and there’s never a boring chapter. It actually can become addicting. Even reading this late at night, I just couldn’t put the book down and wanted to continue reading. I definitely will be buying more books from this series.

The suspense in “Smoked Out” is over the top! Wolf is about as damaged as a man can be and not be dead. When he went over a cliff holding a rope in the last book, he ended up with a broken pelvis, broken femur, and multiple cracked vertebrae. Those were just some of the physical injuries; emotionally he is grieving big time. His son won’t speak to him because he blames Wolf for his mother’s murder! Jack isn’t the only one; the FBI believe David Wolf murdered Sarah, his ex, and Carter Willis. Special Agent Luke is not dating David anymore, but even if she wanted to help him, the FBI are watching her and David. Carter Willis is an unknown; Wolf wants to know who he is, but the FBI are acting dumb and blind.

Three months after his traumatic injuries, David Wolf is walking again, but is still in a tremendous amount of pain. Nothing else has really changed in his life. David decides he has to solve his ex-wife’s murder and starts asking questions around town, even though he faints or just falls asleep every once in a while! This stirs everything and everyone up; S.A. Luke decides she has to help David, even if it means her job.

Wolf is a man who does not give up; the twists and turns this case takes will have you wondering if you are imagining things! This is a very exciting and interesting read!
