Star Wars: The New Jedi Order: The Final Prophecy

Why do people praise books like this?? Why can’t any of these authors write within the context of the rest of this series or universe. I really liked Keyes first two books in this series, however, this book had major issues.

1) The first issue is this book is bad to jump and skip events. Early on a chapter ends mid discussion about a plan to infiltrate Coruscant and it’s even mentioned how hard it will be just to get there and then the next chapter picks up already dropping into the atmosphere of Coruscant. That felt like a big missing section of information!!!
2) Secondly, this plan is stupid…..stupid….stupid….Zonama Sekot is the secret weapon of the Jedi against the Vong and they are actually gonna sneak into Coruscant to sneak a Vong there just bc he claims to not be like the others…..no wonder the GFFA/Jedi are losing this war!!!!!
3) Then, the problem becomes lack of character knowledge….Tahiri who last book settled her problems and emerged with a different confident mature personality unlike her previous self seems to revert to teenager status from before her issues even started…she’s petulant and whiny just like a teenager….it’s like the author didn’t even read the previous books
4) Then, the Prophet, who has spent 3 books telling this story of rise to power, just pulls out a vilip suddenly and calls to Shimmra to throw it all away….and I know he didn’t really believe in his movement, but it came so sudden and out of nowhere it’s hard to believe that was how his actual plan all along was gonna play out….and it just makes all that stuff in the previous books I had to read useless
5) Then, to waste 4 books now on this planet and still have no idea why it’s important is just totally cheap suspense to make you buy more books
6) Then, out of nowhere Tahiri asks Corran to be her master bc he might understand her even though this book has openly shown Corran be dismissive of her the entire time and question her stability bc of her shaped mind
7) Also, Jaina is once again rendered damsel in distress for the 3rd or 4th book in a row…..just a useless ever repeating storyline ruining a character that this shouldn’t happen to and the author should know better than to go to that well again after it’s been used by a previous author in the most recent books
8) Finally, I’m tired of the Jedi being shown as basically useless…..near the end, they don’t stop the bad guy from committing espionage, even worse, he’s a nonfighter who mocks one Jedi for wanting to fight and immediately turns around and bests another Jedi and takes her lightsaber just bc she dodged into a rail when she avoided one attack from the nonfighter …..if that’s all it takes to defeat a Jedi……
9) This nonfighter, then is able to escape death like 3 more times in the last 40 pages of the book….the character is interesting so it’s not I want him dead yet….but this is just horrible storytelling to keep him alive…write better!!!

I just don’t understand how all these NJO books reviews have mostly 4 and 5 stars……do people not know how to critique a book properly??? Yes, it’s Star Wars and I love the concept….but why can’t these authors write good stories within this universe?? And how can more people not see obvious issues like I pointed out??? They seem so obvious to me

Well, at long last I am nearing the end of the New Jedi Order series of nineteen books, and I believe that the last two books will restore my enthusiasm. The Final Prophecy, the next-to-last book, is certainly a step in the right direction. Greg Keyes has done a good job. This book seems more focused on select Jedi and Yuuzhan Vong rather than trying to describe everybody’s adventures while at the same time going into never-ending discussions of Jedi philosophy. The New Jedi Order really could have been reduced by about half.

The living planet Zonama Sekot is the crux of the book. I found a sentient planet to be an interesting concept. Corran Horn and Tahiri are sent on a mission to Zonama Sekot. As if that didn’t cause enough problems, their companions on the mission are three Yuuzhan Vong – Harrar, an important priest; Nen Yim, a shaper; and Nom Anor in his Prophet disguise. All of this creates an extremely interesting mix of characters thrown together. Plus, Luke Skywalker and Jacen Solo are already on the planet with a team trying to understand Zonana Sekot’s potential role in bringing about peace with the Yuuzhon Vong. An interesting plot.

As if this weren’t enough, we also have Wedge Antilles leading a campaign to retake the Bilbringer system. Things do not go well and Wedge’s forces find themselves stranded deep in Yuuzhan Vong space cut off from help. Trickery and outstanding tactics will be called for. Is Wedge up to the challenge?

The Final Prophecy is a must-read book, especially if you have gone this far in the New Jedi Order series. One more book to go. Hang in there.

I just knew Greg Keyes would be able to rescue the “New Jedi Order” from “The Force Heretic Trilogy.” Finally, Sonama Sekot is palatable. Tahiri is no longer the annoying, half-possessed Yuuzhan Vong creation. The characters become people we can care about once more.

Even the Yuuzhan Vong had arcs. Nen Yim and Harrar — wonderful. Nom Anor, I can’t say I’ve ever been fond of him, but here he was at least interesting.

The story follows Corran and Tahiri as they help Nen Yim escape to Sonama Sekot. Harrar and Nom Anor come along for the ride. Everyone has their own agenda regarding Sekot.

Han, Leia, Wedge, and Jaina battle the Vong at Bilbringi. This takes up many pages, and we see lots of action, but it feels secondary to the story on Sonama Sekot.

Luke, Mara and Jacen appear only briefly.

Greg Keys is marvelous with character development. It’s only with his books that I grow to care about the Yuuzhan Vong. “The Final Prophecy” is reminiscent of “Conquest.” Nen Yim is a person with a past. Harrar grows in unexpected ways.

Tahiri — if you’ve been reading my reviews, you know what I think of Tahiri. Up until now, I couldn’t understand her. She was a pest on my Kindle screen. I read her because she was there. But Keyes grew her up, made her believable, brought her to life. For the first time ever, I *like* her.

I’m very glad Keyes was brought in to write one of the final books of the series. He has certainly wound it up for what I hope to be a dramatic conclusion.

It is really very hard to review this book as it stands as it is really just a set of foundations for the Unifying Force.
Lets just say some of the major characters are flung across the universe, a couple of battles happen, something upsets the Galactic Republic. We are given more (a lot more) insights into the Vong, Nom Anor changes from being a sore (why was he still alive type sore) into something very different, and then changes again. (but thats Nom Anor for you)
Too say any more would risk spoiling things for you. This is a great scene setting novel.
As I have said before if you haven’t read any of the NJO books then this is DEFINATLY NOT the place to start. Go and buy Vector Prime, set aside enough cash to buy the rest of the series, arrange for a close relative to die (work/school excuse) and strap yourself in for a ride that can only be compared to the original Starwars movie. If you have already done read the previous books then there is no point me telling you to buy this one as I will assume thats not an issue.
