Lorimer has recovered from his trauma and is back at work. Following up on the Quiet Release scam, he finds the mastermind of the plot is still at large. What’s more, he is murdering homeless men and stealing their identities. He has even gone so far as to align himself with Gallager, who controls drug trafficing in the city and whom Larimer has been trying to capture for years. Also, Lorimer knows there is a bad cop in the division, passing information to Gallager. Promoted to head of MIT, he has more problems to deal with than he imagined. He calls in Solly for some profiling. Solly is one of my favorite characters in this series. He has some good news not concerning the case.

This is number 14 in the Lorimer series and I think they just get better and better. Traumatised, and suffering flashbacks after witnessing a particularly horrific murder Lorimer is to attend Castlebrae, a facility which helps police officers recover from their injuries, both physical and mental. While there he sees short news clip and recognises a face. It was the face of the man who was believed to be behind the Quiet Release organisation which ended patients lives in return for payment from the relatives. Lorimer has a personal reason for wanting to track down this elusive killer. He makes contact with DC Kirsty Wilson and enlists her help along with that of his psychologist friend Professor Solly Brightman. Would the case be reopened?
In Glasgow homeless and vulnerable men are dying from overdoses. But who is supplying them with high grade heroin? In a fast paced plot which involves corrupt police, a Glasgow crime lord, and the elusive killer, the author has woven a compelling and gripping story. Its always a pleasure to meet the familiar characters and it is interesting to see how the characters have developed over time and to see their interaction with each other. And what a surprise ending! I cant wait to see what happens next.
