Detective Inspector (DI) Nick Dixon of the Avon and Somerset CID is still recovering from his last case (one that landed him in the hospital) and has just returned from a week holiday on Cyprus. Still a little jetlagged, he’s pulled into a new case. Isobel Swan, a student at Brunel School, has been found murdered. The police need someone undercover inside the school to track down what might have happened. And Dixon is a graduate of a school in the same town, St. Dunstan’s. He knows how public schools work.

Dixon knows even more than the police realize. Isobel looks exactly like Dixon’s school-time girlfriend, who disappeared and was never seen again. Dixon intuitively knows that the same killer is at work. Technically, he should not be involved in the case because of his previous connection. But now he has the chance to find Isobel’s killer, and what happened to his own girlfriend 17 years before.

“Swansong” is Damien Boyd’s fourth DI Nick Dixon mystery, and it’s a riveting read.

Posing as a teacher in training, Dixon talks to teachers, staff, and students, sitting through lectures (to maintain his cover) but also carefully watching. Several of the teachers and staff have connections to St. Dunstan’s – either as employees or students. And Dixon knows that one of them must be the killer.

Assisted by Detective Constable Jane Winter (also Dixon’s current girlfriend) and a police team, Dixon looks at both the past and the present to find the murderer. Boyd’s novels are a combination of mystery and police procedural, and they underscore just how much tedious and often repetitious “slogging through” happens in a murder inquiry.

Swansong audiobook in series DI Nick Dixon Crime

I absolutely was enthralled by this book. We learned more about Nick Dixon and his past. We learned more about Jane, and what she looks like. And we have further proof that Damien Boyd loves his endings to be unexpected and all twisted up! This read went fast, was near impossible to put down, and had more twists and turns than someone who is twerking lol! I can’t wait to see what Mr. Boyd pulls out of his hat next. This book put this author at the top of my “must read list” and is on his way to becoming a personal favorite. Highly recommend!!!

Audiobook Swansong by Damien Boyd

After a slow and somewhat confusing start (explaining the geography of a boarding school), the plot grew intense. Years ago, Nick’s girlfriend at school had been murdered. When Nick was called to work a similar case, no one knew of his past experience, and he kept the information to himself. Not everyone at the school was who they seemed. The two missing girls could have been twins. Eventually he found a third and forth missing girl — years apart. Trying to hide his connection to the case while still following every clue was wearing. He knew he was missing something, something he had seen, but when his current girlfriend, another officer, is kidnapped, Nick is in a race against time.

Audio Swansong narrated by Napoleon Ryan

I bought the first 4 books last year, but didn’t read them until this past week! I “binge” read all four and am ordering #5 and preordering #6. Not only are the plots great, but the characters are so well developed that a personal relationship with them is inevitable! Strongly suggest that one should start with the first book and read in sequence. It will permit the reader to form the character links but will not affect the stand-alone plots. I seldom rate any book with 5 stars but the four I have read so far are each worthy of 5 gold stars!

Another fabulous book in the Nick Dixon series. Exciting. Suspenseful. Emotional. It will break your heart then put it back together. It was like being in the story along-side Nick. You feel his determination and pain in this highly personal case for him. You will be guessing until the end. Exceptionally written! Couldn’t put it down.
