The Aviators audiobook

I had great expectations for this book, but unfortunately, I was left with doubts regarding the author’s authenticity. In his discussion of WWII’s early German conquests, the author mistakenly claims that Nazi forces conquered Finland and Sweden. To clarify, Finland was an ally of Germany throughout the war, and Sweden maintained its neutrality. Such a glaring mistake naturally raised concerns about the book’s overall accuracy. Furthermore, the author states that a “large portion of the American Army… including the 101st Airborne Division” was encircled by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. This is not accurate. The 101st was the sole division (out of nearly 50) to be surrounded in that battle.

Although I didn’t document every error, there were several others that weren’t as blatantly wrong but still questionable. The author occasionally overstates the influence of the three Aviators. One example includes an assertion that one of them was told to inform air corps members in N. Africa and the Mediterranean about extended tour durations. It’s improbable that a visiting civilian would convey such significant changes. Another claim suggests the Doolittle raid was a pivotal factor in Japan’s defeat. However, most historians and wartime leaders agree its main benefit was morale-boosting. Additionally, the German JU-88 bombers’ description as one of Germany’s most lethal weapons is misleading since single-engine fighters would have posed a greater threat.

While these issues might seem minor, they undermine the book’s credibility. The recurrent discrepancies and subtle exaggerations made me question its factual foundation. Moreover, the book doesn’t offer much that hasn’t been covered in prior biographies of the main figures. The author fails to convincingly weave together the experiences of the three aviators to showcase their collective contribution to aviation.

That said, I rate it 3 stars. Despite its flaws, it’s engaging, offers some new insights (assuming they’re correct), and is a brisk read. Just approach it with a discerning eye.

Audio The Aviators narrated by Robertson Dean

If you, like me at 62 and the child of a WWII aviator, have a fascination with the dawn of modern aviation, this book will captivate you to the point of wanting to consume it in one go. Although its length may prevent a single sitting read, it’s hard to set aside. The names Doolittle, Lindbergh, and Rickenbacker might ring a bell, but their intertwined stories as presented here are nothing short of astonishing. The narrative suggests that the trio’s timely genius is the reason we progressed beyond propeller-driven planes. Their journeys, challenges, and relentless drive to push the boundaries of aviation are nothing short of inspiring. While there might still be pioneers today with similar determination, our contemporary society either overlooks them or undervalues their monumental contributions. The profound influence of The Aviators on our world will leave you in awe. Initially, I encountered this narrative as an audio book from the library but was so taken that I secured a copy to cherish in my personal collection. For history enthusiasts and admirers of changemakers, this book is a treasure.

These men were not just figures in history; they were true heroes with fascinating lives. Their service in World War II was a choice, not a mandate. Eddie Rickenbacker, renowned as the top American ace of World War I, had a particularly intriguing encounter post-war. On a visit to Germany, he met with several German pilots, including Hermann Goering. While many perceive Goering as an eccentric, this interaction proved profound. Goering detailed plans for Germany to restore its empire via air dominance, with civilian setups serving as a façade for military training. Civilian aircraft would lay the foundation for future military advancements. When Rickenbacker revisited Germany roughly 15 years later, Goering had transformed his predictions into reality and reminded Rickenbacker of their prior discussion. Attempting to alert the British and American governments, Rickenbacker was met with indifference, underscoring the age-old tendency to sideline visionaries.

Winston Groom, the talent behind “Forrest Gump,” showcases his adept storytelling here. Instead of presenting three distinct biographies, the book follows a rough chronological layout. This can occasionally muddle the clarity of individual contributions during less significant moments. Nevertheless, the book is a compelling read and comes highly recommended.
