Holy cow. I thought I knew a lot about post-WWII Cold War Europe and the various efforts to defend against the Soviets. While this novel is set in contemporary Italy, it reaches back into the troubled era of the 1970’s and sheds some light on a perhaps ill-conceived scheme to keep Italy and other countries from drifting to the left and the intersection of crime. From my experience in Bosnia, Afghanistan and the the US European Command, I can say the nexus between terror, drugs, and crime is spot on. I didn’t realize, however, some of the roots that had NATO sponsorship. The only thing I didn’t like was the ending. It just seemed to end right in the midst of the action, with a comment on the aftermath as an afterthought in the following novel.

The Blue Demon audiobook in series Nic Costa
If you love history (and anything Italian) and conspiracy theories, buy this book! I wasn’t expecting all the political intrigue and background, so I got bogged down in the first few chapters – that won’t happen if you like that stuff. But the characters are really well drawn and the story draws you in. I couldn’t read fast enough once I got halfway through. Very exciting ending.
I have read all eight of David Henson’s Nick Costa and sight unseen, I pre-ordered this one and got it last week. After I finished my current novel, I started this book and read it during most of my free time, including one night up to 2am. It takes a bit of getting use to the intimate exposure to Italy, Rome and the characters, but if you put the time in, you will find this book a most exciting read. I had expected it to end in the traditional way (cops get the bad guys and find a new love), but David again threw in some new techniques and plot twists. It is not my place here to expose the plot or how it ends, but Nick and his team of cohorts (plus one or two more) live to fight the big fights! For those new to this series, David Henson has his own site and blog: […]. He is without doubt one of the best authors I have read and I have been reading (and soon writing) for many years now!

Audiobook The Blue Demon by David Hewson
I am a great fan of david hewson and read I think all of his books. His flowing descriptions of Rome have always been a part of his crime novels. You can almost think you are there. This book however is off the mark. The main character nick costa seems not to be part of the well known ‘team’ They are on the fringe and this time the book seems to be more of a tour guide! I was put off by another well known author’s continual description in her novels of her home town and it’s history. so please David, tone it down. Brilliant intricate stories usually but this one lost it’s way me thinks. Far too much ‘italian speak’ I found myself turning pages without reading them, which is a shame because I love the characters he’s created over a period of time.
Enjoyed all the books so far, despite some of the ‘good guys’ getting killed along the way. This one was a bit of a mixed bag, hard going in places and (probably just me) a little confusing. Still worth a read. On to the next one.

Audio The Blue Demon narrated by Sean Baker
I have read most of the Costa series and this was the first to disappoint. It seems like an attempt to write a thriller and add in a bit of mythology. it does not work and there are many slow passages trying to set the scene and giving history lessons
