The Burning Soul audiobook free
It’s another home run for John Connolly in his Charlie Parker series, the Burning Soul. As always, Charlie moves between reality and the supernatural effortlessly. This novel was not as dark as others, but still hinted at the paranormal/spirituality found in most of Connolly’s work.
Connolly knows how to weave a tale that will keep you spell bound until the end. His main protagonist, Charlie Parker, is a flawed PI, that always gets the job done, even if he has to call in his support team of Louis and Angel and the Fulchi brothers. My only regret was that we didn’t see much of Louis and Angel in this storyline and so their intrinsic good-natured bickering was sorely missed as they provide great comic relief in what is usually a murky tale filled with dark specters.
Connolly is one of the best writers in this genre and he knows how to use words in ways that would likely be found in great literature instead of suspense novels. His writing is truly mesmerizing and his storylines are always unique. You will never feel as though he writes formulaically like a lot of suspense writers lapse into as they churn out their assembly line books.
While the Burning Soul is not my favorite of Connolly’s creations, it is still full of fleshed out characters, plot twists that you’ll never see coming, and a close inspection of the underbelly of human nature. Some will not like the crudeness of what Mr. Connolly creates and it will offend those with delicate sensibilities, but hang on thrill seekers—you will not be disappointed.
One complaint—there were too many characters in this novel that had small roles but some seemed to blossom into someone meaningful in the end. For example: it took me a while to figure out who and why Walsh appeared in the end as a man on a mission when he really doesn’t have a role throughout the storyline beyond his name and title.
If you don’t mind a little paranormal/supernatural in an otherwise excellently crafted thriller, then you will love John Connolly. Highly recommended.

The Burning Soul series Charlie Parker
‘Burning Soul’ by John Connolly is another book that features the character of private investigator Charlie Parker, and as with all things Parker gets involved in, all is not what it seems.
A young girl named Anna Kore, vanishes while out with a friend, causing an uproar in the quiet town of Pastor’s Bay, Maine. Connolly presents the police theory that ‘after 3 hours, the abduction of a child is routinely treated as a homicide’ and the lead detective Walsh, treats this theory as a truth.
Parker is brought into the story by an attorney named Aimee Price. She has been hired by a man called Randall Haight. Haight and a friend had been convicted of killing a young girl when he was just a boy himself. After serving his time in jail, he was released and given the new identity of Randall Haight, who moved to Maine to live a quiet life as an accountant. Recently after the abduction of Anna Kore, Haight begins receiving threatening letters and photos of the crime he committed as a youth. These records were to have been sealed when he received his new identity. So someone has information they should not have, and for unknown reasons is sending them to him.
Haight is afraid that his past will be revealed as a child killer and the blame for the disappearance of Anna will be pinned on him, something he claims to have no involvement with. Parker reluctantly agrees to assist Price with the problem Haight is having due to the fact he finds things do not add up and is eager to see if he can, if possible assist in finding the missing girl.
Like all the Charlie Parker books, this one goes places beyond the average crime story. Where as this tale is more straight forward than the others, lacking the somewhat supernatural elements that Parker novels entails, it still holds twists and turns and ugly truths.
Not the most powerful of Connolly’s Parker novels, but even a weaker Parker novel stands way above other books due to the great writing presented in all of them. As always, Connolly does not disappoint with ‘Burning Soul’.

Audiobook The Burning Soul by John Connolly
John Connolly has become over the past few years one of my very favorite authors. He is just so talented and I anticipate each one of his books with great delight – and though I try my best to savor each one, I end up not being able to put it down until I’ve finished. And this tenth installment of the Charlie Parker series is no exception! Connolly continues to prove his skill and overall mastery with words, characters and plot. And while the plot here isn’t perhaps as intricate as some of his previous books, it is still a very enjoyable read and quite solidly accomplished, with plenty of surprises tossed in along the way.
The worst part of the whole novel was finishing it, knowing that it will be another year before finally getting to read what happens next to these oh-so-real characters. I think I may re-read the whole series before next year’s release just to tide me over… he is such a wonderful writer! I only wish that the US release dates would be the same as the UK ones – every year I am tempted to pay exorbitant shipping to get it a few weeks earlier here…
The tenth volume in the Charlie Parker series is, so far at least into my re-reading endeavor of consecutively consuming all of the books from start to the 2014 release, the one that I remember the most. But, still, it’s an exciting read and a well-plotted one (and clearly quite memorable in how all the varying pieces fit together). Charlie plays a large role here, with some assistance from Louis and Angel – though their parts are relatively minor. As always, Connolly writes wonderfully and in some ways, this is a lighter installment to the series overall – though there are still some downright creepy part – particularly the supernatural elements!

Audio The Burning Soul narrated by Jeff Harding
If you haven’t read this series of books you have missed out. The characters in this books are very well written and can make you shake with laughter.
I recently gave one of the books to a friend to read who promptly bout all the others in the series. My mum buys the newest book for me every Christmas and I start reading it on Christmas Day.
The books follow the same characters which is something that I like in books. You don’t have to start at the beginning of the series but it is nice to. Highly recommend and you won’t be disappointed.

Another successful novel in the Charlie Parker series, yet with a slightly different feel about it. It’s a slow burner, very much so – takes a long time to get going and develop the different strands. And there’s not much private-investigating, or detective-ing going on. Which means some fairly long passages of explanation are needed. Angel and Louis appear, but aren’t that essential.
I enjoyed the book, but felt it was just marking time. An episode in the series to keep us interested, keep us ticking over, but which doesn’t take us much further on. It it would be unfair to give it three stars; but it only just scrapes four.
