The Case of the Gypsy Good-bye

I have just read the final installment of the Enola Holmes mysteries. It took me but a few days to devour them all, as Ive practically been reading non stop! I couldnt bear to take time away from reading the next one to write a review of the one I had just finished, so I will write this review to serve for all of them. I am a prodigious reader, so when I tell you that I havent enjoyed a book as much as I have these in many years, you will get an idea of how much I love them! Each one is a gem unto itself, but as a body of work, they comprise a masterpiece! I am disconsolate to have reached the end, although even so, I must congratulate the author on having resolved the overarching plot most satisfyingly. I am looking forward to reading her other books, but I doubt I will ever replace these from their position as my favorites! I would recommend these book to so many sorts and ages of readers. I have read they were written for a younger audience, but I turned 70 last month, and was still utterly captivated by them. Thank you, Nancy Springer, for your amazing talent and your obvious painstakingly thorough research, which in no way diminished the core of understanding of the human heart that transcends time.

I had been putting off reading this for so long, because I was so sad that it was the last. But, I finally could not wait any longer so I went ahead and decided to read it. I just cannot say enough about this series and the movie. Ohhhh, this one was amazing, but it was really sad….I love this series soooooo much. Enola is such a fun and amazing character, I love her soooo much. I love this whole series sooo much!!! All the books are amazing and so mysterious, suspensful, thrilling, and just downright plain old fun. Some of the best mysteries I’ve ever read. (Or watched for that matter). I first watched the movie, then I loved it soo much so I decided to read the series. It is amazing and I highly recommend the movie and the whole six book series! At first I thought that this one was the last book:( But, then I saw that there is another book coming out in August 2021! It is called “Enola Holmes and the Black Baruche!” You cannot imagine my utter surprise and excitement! Thank you soooo much Nancy Springer! I already have it pre-ordered and am highly anticipating its release! And I soo hope there is going to be a second movie! Anyway. I highly recomend the movie and this series, and after you watch the movie and finish the series order or pre-order the new book!! I highly recommend!!!!!! Do it now;););)

This is the 6th and final book in the series of period comic mysteries featuring Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister Enola. Beginning the series here would completely spoil the overall story arc which would be a shame since it is quite an entertaining read.

Once again Enola finds herself working on the same case as her older brother Sherlock. A beautiful young woman, the cherished wife of a Spanish Duke has mysteriously disappeared. The young woman had rather inexplicable ventured into an Underground Tube station and vanished. Meanwhile Sherlock and Mycroft are still in pursuit of Enola, coming increasingly closer and Enola finds herself beginning to despair of ever finding her mother. Gradually all three threads of the story meet and are resolved tying up all the lose ends left dangling throughout the series.

According to the publishers these books are written for ages 8 and up. I disagree. The reading level might be accessible to some 8 year olds much of the subject matter is too mature, at least in my opinion, for children that young. There are descriptions of Victorian life that are too harsh for young children and more suited for those a couple years older at least. The books are quite well written with plots complex enough to engage an adult reader making these a good choice to spark a family discussion.

This final Enola Holmes mystery finally answers the question that has been hovering beneath all the other stories: where is Enola’s mother? It also has Enola looking for Lady Blanchefleur del Campo who disappeared one day into London’s new underground.

Sherlock is also looking for Enola but, this time, it is because a strange package has been delivered to their family home for her. Sherlock has moderated his goal for Enola too. After being educated by Florence Nightingale in the previous book about the horrors of proper boarding schools, he is rethinking his plans for Enola’s future. However, Mycroft is the one with legal authority over Enola and his thinking about her future hasn’t changed.

Again this book has a cipher that has to be decoded, disguises aplenty, and lots of adventure in Victorian England. It also has a maturing Enola and a new relationship for her with her much older brothers.

This was a satisfying conclusion to an excellent historical mystery series.

My only complaint is that there doesn’t seem to be another book in the series… yet. I certainly hope there will be more. It’s a rare book that I’ll want to read to read twice, let alone an entire series, but re-read, I surely will. The series would work well as a single (annotated!) volume, for the ultimate mystery facing Enola begins and ends the saga. Kudos to Ms. Springer.
