The Curse of Home (The Darkness Within Saga #4)

First, I like this story. That said I only gave it 3 stars because the editing is awful and the author hasnt grown. There are still logic and plot holes all over the place, confusing sentences, poorly explained sequences, and the spelling and grammar, gah dont get me started. I only read this book because the audiobook isnt out yet and I did t want to wait. My advice, wait for the audiobook, listening to someone read the book fixes the grammar and spelling. It wont fix the plot holes, but its a start.

Second, the story. Its a bit of a let down. At the end of the 3rd book Kael is supposed to be a god. At least a bit of a badass, but no. He spends the whole 4th book just about dying and sucking like all the other books. There is a good story in there, but what has been put on the market is a rough draft at best.

While I liked this part of the series, it definitely was not the most exciting of the books so far. There seemed to be a lot of parts where the characters seemed to be going in circles. I kept wondering where exactly the story was going, and while I can often get an inkling of where the story is headed, I had no clue this time around.

The ending left a lot of questions, and I can’t wait for the next, while at the same time hope it’s better than this one.

And I just have to say that the number of spelling errors in this book was atrocious. Of course, no book is edited perfectly, and things do slip through, but any good editor should have found most, if not all, of these spelling errors, as well as the misuse of some commas.

I’ve been waiting for this book since burning through the last book, but thankfully Franx churns them out one after the other. It probably also doesn’t help that I finished in less than 24 hrs and now need to wait again. Franx does an amazing job immersing you in the story from the very beginning. A must read for any fantasy lover, but be warned you will likely find yourself looking at the time and wondering where the last couple hours went as you accompany Kael on his epic quest.

I had high hopes for this series. It seemed interesting and unique.

But this book really made no sense to me, and makes me question the whole series of books. One minute, the protagonist has “the powers of a god”, and angels and demons fear him. The next minute, he has to flee in terror from a couple guys with pointed sticks.

One minute, everybody has magic. The next, all magic is gone. Then it’s back. Then it’s gone again. What?!

I’m sorry I started reading this series, and I’m sorry I bought this book. I will not be buying the next.

This is another fantastic book by JD Franx. I have read all of his books multiple times. This is a must read for all fantasy readers out there. He has created an intricate and detailed world and I can see him having multiple books and story lines like R.A. Salvatore with his Forgotten Realm series involving Drizzt and other characters, or like Raymond E. Feist with Magician and the 25+ books after that. I’m impatiently trying to patiently wait for the next book. I can’t wait.
