Over the years, post-apocalyptic stories have had their ups and downs in popularity, but few have achieved the level of success that The Walking Dead has garnered. Now, I know this may seem like a digression, but please bear with me. As a horror enthusiast, people were often surprised when I confessed that I stopped watching The Walking Dead after just two seasons, and I never regretted that decision. The reason behind it, however, is quite simple: I quickly realized, as both Robert Kirkman’s source material and the TV series demonstrated, that it was nothing more than “misery porn.” Its sole purpose seemed to be to subject its characters to relentless suffering and force viewers to witness the darkest aspects of humanity. Now, don’t get me wrong—I’m no stranger to horror. I’ve witnessed some twisted films and encountered my fair share of deranged villains. But the beauty of horror novels and films lies in their finite nature; they tell a story, and then they conclude. On the other hand, it dawned on me that The Walking Dead was designed to be an unending narrative, an endless stream of horrors vying to outdo one another, leaving the audience engaged in an escalating cycle of misery and terror. And honestly, that’s the last thing I need in my life.
