rewrite “A lot of the plotlines from the previous 3 books converge and climax (if this were in the novel, someone would have to say, “Heh heh, CLIMAX!”) in this book, which seems to wrap up the initial . . . er, “campaign” . . . of this story of Gamers sucked (“LOL! Sucked!”) into the world of Caverns & Creatures. The story is fun, with a lot of very lowbrow humor (though the dildo plays a much less significant part in the plot of this one!). If you liked books I-III, you’ll like this one. From this point on, I believe the author moved on to produced more short stories set in the same world, bundled in collections of 6 stories (d6, 2d6, 3d6, etc. – isn’t that clever, Gamers?). I’ll pick some up when I get a chance. The end of this book says there will be a “Critical Failures V,” but I do not believe it has happened yet, as of this writing.”

Critical Failures IV audiobook Series Caverns and Creatures

Unfortunately, this installment doesn’t quite live up to the standards set by its predecessors.

The issue doesn’t lie in the sensitive topics of the jokes, but rather in the lack of effort behind them. It feels as though the author progressively pushed Tim into becoming more self-annoying towards the end of the third book, and suddenly, all the characters become aware of it. Each character undergoes a drastic change in personality and behavior to acknowledge this shift, which feels forced and unnatural.

Clearly, this book attempts to incorporate current political satire, but it does so lazily, almost as if the author didn’t genuinely care about it beyond venting on a particularly bad day.

Denise and Randy had the potential to be genuinely funny, but it seems that the author lacks sufficient knowledge of southern culture to make it work. As a result, we are left with shallow caricatures of rednecks, and even Randy abandons his initial characterization halfway through the book in favor of a newfound religion. It’s quite frustrating to witness the abrupt transition from one-dimensional character to another in the middle of the story, especially when the rest of the book feels uninspired.

In the first three books, the humor relied on not-so-well-intentioned characters facing the worst luck, resulting in comical clumsiness. However, the fourth book presents everyone as insufferable rather than clumsy. Instead of the idiot ball being passed around for amusement, it feels like everyone is simultaneously holding it. This could be a consequence of having too many characters engaged in various activities.

Furthermore, a significant foreshadowing moment is thrown in the reader’s face, but it doesn’t seem to have any impact on the storyline. Then, the exact same foreshadowing occurs again. It’s almost as if the narrative briefly shifted into a lazy detective story. I would have expected either the characters to take notice or for the foreshadowing to be more subtly incorporated. The stark contrast between these two approaches makes that particular moment exceptionally frustrating.

That being said, there are still enjoyable aspects within the book. The story itself is one of the most intriguing and fast-paced in the series, indicating that the author dedicated more effort to the plot than to the development of the characters. The sequence of events and the interplay between different groups trying to uncover each other’s actions is genuinely humorous.

However, the issue of character flanderization greatly impacts this arc, and it is my hope that the author will tone it down in future installments.

Audiobook Critical Failures IV by Robert Bevan

This book managed to elicit genuine laughter from me on multiple occasions, resulting in curious glances from my non-reading neighbors nearby. It certainly pushes boundaries, so if you’re easily offended or struggle to take jokes in stride, I would advise approaching it with caution. Nevertheless, I am eagerly anticipating diving into the remaining books in the series!

Audio Critical Failures IV narrated by Jonathan Sleep

Robert is still just a funny guy. He continues to come up with clever ways to use d&d rules for hilarious plot devices. Ive consumed the first four novels in as many days so I am definitely enjoying them. However something changed in this book. Its still funny, still worth the read, but Robert completely changes several main characters personalities out of nowhere. Other reviews are calling it character arc but I went straight from the end of book three to this one and believe me it was a very sudden shift. Still its a good read, still very always sunny in Philadelphia meets D&D. Im moving straight into book 5 now so Im still a fan.

If I did have a problem with this book it would be the introduction of Christianity to the game world. I know it is part of the story and it was pretty funny reading about all the misunderstandings. Personally, as an atheist I make it a point to dump boiling oil on all missionaries who knock on my door.
Tim’s ending took me for a curve ball, and I am glad that unlike most authors you understand at least the concept of drama.
Overall I was more or less happy with this book. I might not re-read this book like the previous ones but I will look out for the next ones.
