Mary Jekyll finds herself in a dire situation following the recent death of her mother, which comes years after her father passed away. Struggling financially, Mary must find a way to support herself. Meanwhile, a series of grisly and unsolved murders grip the streets of London, leading Mary to suspect the return of Edward Hyde, her father’s former friend. Driven by the prospect of a reward for Hyde’s capture, Mary, aided by a renowned detective and his Doctor companion, pieces together the clues that ultimately lead to the discovery of Diana Hyde.

As Diana’s true identity is unveiled, a clandestine society of scientists emerges from the shadows, their past experiments resurfacing. Together with Catherine Moreau, Beatrice Rappaccini, and Justine Frankenstein, Mary embarks on a quest to unravel the mysteries of their own pasts and the secret society, aiming to apprehend a murderer before the next victim falls.

The current literary trend of revisiting the classics is exemplified in Theodora Goss’s work, which skillfully expands upon these timeless tales. The author takes the “next generation” of iconic monsters and casts them as the heroines of the story—a fascinating approach that breathes new life into the narrative.

The storytelling technique employed in Strange Case initially requires some adjustment but ultimately proves engaging. The girls themselves narrate the tale, interrupting the narrative with amusing interjections. They are essentially documenting their adventures for publication, allowing readers to experience their distinct voices and perspectives.

The portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is particularly intriguing. His appearance in the story feels somewhat peculiar, but it can be attributed to how the “narrators/writers” perceive him. Considering that Holmes’s exploits are relayed to the public by Dr. Watson, his characterization is shaped by Watson’s perspective. This exploration of different viewpoints adds depth to the narrative.

Although Mary is the central protagonist of Strange Case, it is Beatrice Rappaccini who captivates the reader the most, possibly because her classical story remains unfamiliar. Given the names Jekyll, Hyde, Moreau, and Frankenstein, one can infer certain aspects about the other characters. However, for those unacquainted with Rappaccini’s Daughter, a short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, her experiences and struggles prove more enigmatic and intriguing.

While the unsolved murders form a secondary plotline, the primary focus lies on the mysteries surrounding the girls’ lives and the society that shaped them. The surface of this enigma is barely scratched by the story’s end, with references made to various other adventures undertaken by this group of “monsters.” One can only hope that these tales will be shared with readers in due course.

Nutrition The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughte audiobook Series The Great Courses: Better Living

There exists a particular genre of fantasy and mystery that incorporates not just one, but a whole array of famous historical or classic fictional characters, or characters connected to them, into its fictional world. I like to call them “name-dropper” stories. Unfortunately, many of these tales fall short because the authors fail to develop the personalities of the introduced characters, seemingly believing that merely mentioning their names and a couple of recognizable traits would suffice. However, I believe that this particular story succeeds where others have faltered.

Most of the characters in this narrative are renowned figures at a remove: we encounter not the originals, but the daughters (biological or created) of Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde (both versions, each from different mothers), Dr. Moreau, Rappacini (as in the Hawthorne story), and Frankenstein. Additionally, Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, a Jack-the-Ripper-style murderer, and a few characters from Dracula make appearances around the edges. The central focus of the story revolves around how these daughters, all vibrant, intelligent, and opinionated young women, come together and learn to cooperate in uncovering the connection between their fathers and the sinister plot they were involved in. Due to their fathers’ experiments, each daughter possesses unique “monstrous” attributes—both in terms of personality and, in some cases, physical appearance—that prevent them from fitting into normal Victorian society.

The book’s greatest strength lies in the portrayal of the daughters and the profound bond they develop despite their differences, leading to constant arguments akin to those between sisters, be they literal or figurative. The author skillfully illustrates this dynamic by intermittently inserting short bursts of their arguments into the narrative, primarily narrated by Catherine Moreau (who, by the story’s conclusion, becomes a thriller writer to support herself). Mary Jekyll, the eldest daughter and the one with the most resources, assumes a maternal role within the group, aided by her devoted housekeeper, Mrs. Poole. Diana Hyde, an endearing troublemaker, and Mary are perhaps the most thoroughly developed characters, but the other women have equally intriguing and unusual backgrounds. Justine Frankenstein, whose story unfolds towards the end of the book, ultimately weaves together the narratives of the other daughters. While Holmes and Watson are well-portrayed and play significant roles, they do not steal the spotlight. The connection to Dracula is merely hinted at, with indications that it may be further explored in subsequent installments of the series.

While the book concludes its tale in a satisfactory manner, with the five daughters deciding to share a household and utilizing their unique talents to earn money for its upkeep, only some of the presented mysteries are resolved. We discover the identity of the perpetrator behind the Ripper-style murders and their motivations. However, by the story’s end, we still possess limited knowledge about the “Society of Alchemists” to which the fathers belonged or the ultimate purpose behind the transformative experiments that shaped the daughters. These unresolved aspects, along with the hints of Dracula’s involvement, await exploration in future installments, which I eagerly anticipate.

Audiobook The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughte Clear by The Great Courses

I derived immense pleasure from reading this book, so much so that I willingly purchased the second installment in the series at full price! The premise is fantastic, expanding upon a plethora of peculiar tales from that particular era. If you’re a fan of CJ Archer’s books, chances are you’ll find this one equally enjoyable. In fact, I half-expected the Ministry of Curiosities to make an appearance!

Goss employs an intriguing writing style wherein the protagonists provide commentary on various aspects of the story. I found this unique presentation to be quite appealing. It offers a refreshing and distinct approach to storytelling that I truly appreciate.

Blending various Victorian literary figures into a cohesive narrative has emerged as a popular genre, and Theodora Goss’s Athena Club series stands out as a marvelous addition to this trend. I was thrilled to dive right into the second book after swiftly completing the first, relishing the opportunity to continue the journey.
