The Icarii and Gean peoples have been at war for ages, and the cultures couldnt be more different from each other. But power is power, and The First Sister takes a very Star Wars-esque approach in the best of ways by putting the characters first in the midst of this war.

Doing multiple first-person narrators can be tricky in terms of making each voice distinct from each other, but the three protagonists are all so different that every new chapter felt refreshing as you checked in on another character. First Sister, Lito, and Hiro are bound to make an impact on you, they certainly did for me.

The pacing was just a touch slow to start, but things really kick into high gear and youll be flying through the story very quickly. Ultimately, your appreciation for The First Sister will live or die with how you feel about the protagonists. I think each character was intentionally written to come off as slightly unlikable at the start, but each of them really starts to blossom over time and I grew a loving respect for all three by the end.

I found the worldbuilding to be unique and interesting to learn about, but never too demanding of the readers attention. If you need a full history of the solar system to understand how these cultures advanced so differently from one another, you wont get all of the answers you might want. But whats provided is satisfying and intriguing. The technology introduced in the story created some neat thought experiments for me and it was fun to learn more about how the tech worked as the story went on.

The last thing Ill touch in is representation. This book has a lot of great things to say about people of different cultures and ethnicities. Cultural difference and dehumanization are both very important themes to the story and everything is handled very well.

Overall, The First Sister was an awesome read. Im very excited to see what Linden does next. Also, The First Sister would make an awesome movie/show. Fingers crossed!

Phenomenal book. Linden’s world building is so masterful, it’s hard to believe this is a debut novel. It’s been a long time since I’ve been impatient with the real world distracting me from getting back to a book. I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it, and rushed to pick it back up again when I could. Now that it’s done, I’m impatient for the rest of the trilogy to come out. If the Wachowski sisters don’t option this book immediately, I’ll eat my hat.

Audiobook The First Sister (The First Sister Trilogy #1) by Linden Lewis

The science implausible/unbelievable. The fiction too goth for me….I am an old white man. No one writes SF for OWM anymore.

Audio The First Sister (The First Sister Trilogy #1) narrated by Emily Woo Zeller Gary Tiedemann Neo Cihi

This novel is one of the most refreshing I’ve read in a while. The author has created a tale that brings something new and fresh to the oft-used tropes of science fiction and made a remarkably intricate world for their characters to inhabit. The perspectives of the characters are wound together masterfully, creating a web of narrative that’s perfectly paced and beautifully immersive. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next!

I’ll start by saying this is not a genre that I typically read. I stumbled upon this book and read the excerpt – I was hooked. The story easily immersed me into a genre that was new territory and I was excited to not feel lost or overwhelmed. The characters are so well developed that I’m currently at a loss until the next book is published; I need to know how they progress. I recommend that you give this book a shot. I cannot think of a single negative note against it.
