This is a wonderful collection of short stories written in a most unique manner…from the view point of many of literature’s great mystery and sci-fi authors. The reader at times feels as though they are reading the actual words of Conan Doyle, Stoker, Verne, Wells, etc. The stories can be pulpy and campy at times but of course camp and pulp is what many of these great excelled in. In my opinion William Meikle has become a master at the art of short storytelling.

Audiobook The Ghost Club: Newly Found Tales of Victorian Terror by William Meikle

i picked this up on the recommendation of a friend who is an aficionado of weird fiction, and who is somewhat discerning. I was not disappointed. this is no lazy collection of Sherlock Holmes pastiches. many of the greats of late nineteenth century fiction are there, and in each story, Willie Meikle, rather than opting for a clunky imitation of his model, has picked out tropes and themes that belong to the writer in question, for instance, the first story, purportedly wriitten by Robert Louis Stevenson , explores the vulnerability of a sick, emotionally neglected child with a powerful imagination – a story connected in theme with Stevenson’s own childhood. A quietly confident revisiting of some of the greats of the short story.

Audio The Ghost Club: Newly Found Tales of Victorian Terror narrated by Ian Bladsmith

This collection of supernatural stories as done by the great 19th Century authors doesn’t just entertain with the excellent stories themselves, but also in how Mr Meikle has captured the voices of those authors
