I found it an interesting story initially as I have the same surname. It ended somewhat abruptly as if there was a sequel to follow. perhaps there is!! Coming from the West midlands it was nice to see a book situated in & around Bromsgrove.

there are at least two story lines which gradually merge. Both of interest. Really enjoyed this book.

Audio The Last of the Greenwoods narrated by Katy Sobey

Clare Morrall’s name has often popped up over the years on recommended reading lists from “Astonishing splashes of Colour” to “When the Floods Came” so I was delighted to be offered for review this new book “The Last of the Greenwoods”. Promising to be a good read I settled into it with glee and was not disappointed with her more than eccentric characters, her genuinely original story-telling which will satisfy any reader new or old

It is always difficult to define just what it is that makes a novel into a brilliant journey that you can invest time in ~ it is a secret that only novelists of this calibre truly understand; there is a truthfulness in the writing; a credibility and there is a wondrous imagination that captures the reader from the offset.

Discovering the Greenwood brothers in their abandoned railway carriages is so intriguing and when the letter (reminded me of Forster’s “muddle”) arrives as a catalyst that will reignite the brothers curiosity ~ almost as if some invisible hands turns their clockwork keys~ and off you go into a wonderful story full of deceptively easy prose that will have the reader discovering the alternative to the telly!!

The Last of the Greenwoods is a well-written, literary novel, with interesting characters and an intriguing storyline.

The story moves at a fairly leisurely pace, so if you’re a fan of high-octane thrillers it might not be for you. I found Zohra, the young postwoman, the most engaging character. The two brothers living in the railway carriages didn’t initially interest me as much, but as the story progressed I realised there was a lot more to them than initially appeared.

I enjoyed the Worcestershire (Bromsgrove) setting as I know the area quite well, and the story kept me guessing to the end. I am not sure this novel will become a classic, but it was certainly a very enjoyable read.
