The Messenger (The Messenger #1)

Lets be real, this book earns several of its stars simply for being a rare entry in a genre that Does Not Have Enough Books – by which I mean kick-butt giant robot space opera.

The Messenger is a book for anyone who has ever fantasized about jumping into the cockpit of a giant mech and going on space adventures. Though I often see it compared to Gundam, its actually closer to Voltron for its spirit of fun – Not that Gundam isnt fun, but one of the defining elements of Gundam is its political complexity and War is hell philosophy, and thats 100% absent here. If you watch Gundam for the big stompy robots, though, the comparison still fits.

The plot is rather simple – Main character finds robot which he must then use to avert an impending war with an ancient, nebulous force – but its carried by an interesting cast of characters who wouldnt be out of place in the more playful corners of the Star Wars universe (or perhaps Guardians of the Galaxy).

I pondered subtracting a star because once that ensemble cast is moved to the background to make way for the giant robot, the book actually becomes a little less interesting, but I think thats more a statement on the strength of the cast than the content of the story. Its still an intriguing tale, and its more mysterious corners have me eager to read the sequel when it releases next week!

This book went a whole new direction from the Renegade Star series and killed it. Full of new races, problems, and heroes, if you love Space Opera, you’ll like this.

Each of these authors is incredible on their own, but when they team up they take it to the next level! This book is the perfect balance of creativity and classic sci-fi. It’s unique from all their other books and series, which is quite a feat, and instantly draws the reader in with a great cast of characters and intriguing plotline. It’s not a romance, not overly technical, it’s just pure, unadulterated awesomeness. I can’t wait to see what else this duo creates for us.

Another riveting journey to another time, another space – one that will have you thinking about our existence no matter what you are doing. And its just beginning!!

Nice start to a new universe.

While it has classic fun sci-fi elements of a roguish Captain, a motley crew, ships, blaster, aliens, etc… where the book really sets itself apart is the depth of science that the authors have incorporated into it. Really fascinating how they bridge our existing science (in our real world) with this world.
