Taking place during the classic Old Republic era of the Star Wars universe, Drew Karpyshyn’s ‘Revan’ has quite the reputation to live up to in the eyes of Star Wars fans, at least I would think so. It’s a continuation of the chronicle of the life of Darth Revan, the Sith Lord first debuting in Bioware’s ‘Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic’ a title with a storyline & voice-acting so well-executed it causes many people (myself included) to place it upon a pedestal of esteem superior to that of the Star Wars movies. Revan also was a driving narrative force in the sequel to ‘KOTOR’, produced by Bioware & developed by Obsidian Entertainment, ‘Knights of the Old Republic II : The Sith Lords’ which had entirely new protagonist & different set of villains, as well as a storyline no less impressive than the first ‘KOTOR’, which Karpyshyn incorporates into this novel’s plotline.
Nowadays when I open up & begin reading a Star Wars novel there are a few criteria I try my best to take notice of throughout the course of going through it. Are the characters interesting & enjoyable to read about? Does the plotline hold my interest & move at an acceptable pace? And are the planets & locations the characters travel to during the narrative fully fleshed-out & compelling additions to the adventure? Whether the book is a standalone novel such as this one most certainly is or part of a trilogy, or saga, as for example Drew Karpyshyn’s ‘Darth Bane’ trilogy (absolutely wonderful by the way, I can’t recommend it enough) most assuredly makes a difference.
‘Revan”s plotline is told from a dual-perspective. In addition to the action taking place through Revan’s eyes, Karpyshyn throws in a new character, the volatile pureblood-Sith, Lord Scourge. Personally, I was delighted to read a novel which incorporates members of the red-skinned Sith species into its storyline as they do not seem to appear very often. The specific time in Star Wars history the Sith purebloods appear most likely make placing them into canon narratives a difficult enterprise. The timeline of ‘Revan’ places its events roughly at the time when the Sith were living under the rule of Emperor Tenebrae, during the millennium following the Great Hyperspace War, after the fall of Marka Ragnos & the war of succession fought between Ludo Kressh & Naga Sadow. Tenebrae has surrounded himself by his Dark Council of twelve of his strongest Sith Lords & Lord Scourge is assigned under the jurisdiction of Darth Nyriss, a female Sith pureblood on Tenebrae’s Council, after repeated assassination attempts on her life eventually come to the emperor’s attention. Karphysyn does an impressive job in creating believable Sith characters with depth & dimension, as other members of the emperor’s Dark Council become entangled into the plotline of the novel such as Darths Xendrix, & Igrol.
The Sith Empire’s homeworld of Dromund Kaas is also wonderfully brought to life in all of its dreary, despotic splendor. Karphyshyn also provides to us other interesting locales for his narrative to take place in such as the emperor’s homeworld of Nathema, which Tenebrae subverted the Force to completely suck dry of all life, an utter perversion the Dark Side of the Force which even the Sith Lords serving under him are appalled by. This entire situation bears striking similarities with the scenario involving Sith Lord Darth Nihilus, whom served under the renegade Darth Treya in ‘KOTOR II : The Sith Lords’. Also appearing is the frozen wasteland planet Rekkiad where through Revan’s adventures with close friend, the Mandalorian Canderous Ordo we are treated to much-appreciated bits of that culture’s background such as when snippets of Ordo’s native tongue Mando’a & a few of the more prominent clans in Mandalorian society. It’s interesting when the author takes the time to include such small details as it makes his or her stories more authentic & believable to their audience, I always enjoy it.
The overall tone of Karpyshyn’s writing is straightforward & direct as I have come to expect from the work of his which I’ve read, which is anything but a bad thing. It’s a surprisingly melancholy tale he weaves for us, this isn’t a world where everyone survives & the bad guys all receive justice, it actually involves characters who normally would not be caught dead with one another being forced to work together, the concept of unlikely allies runs strong throughout the course of the narrative. It’s not a long read, if you’re determined you can finish ‘Revan’ in a couple of days. All in all, I strongly recommend ‘The Old Republic : Revan’ by Drew Karpyshyn to anyone who’s a fan of the ‘Knights of the Old Republic’ series or of the Sith in general. Some of the Sith lore appearing in John Jackson Miller’s ‘Lost Tribe of the Sith : The Collected Stories’ is appurtenent with that featured in this one so I’d suggest it to you if you’re seriously interested in the Sith race, I don’t think you will be disappointed.

The Old Republic Deceived series star war
As per usual with Karpyshyn, this is a well written book and engaging. Having played through the main kotor game, it was nice to see Revan again as he is one of the best characters in Star Wars and one of the most unique. However, this book felt more like a story centered around the sith than Revan himself, this can be a pretty annoying problem as you spend more time with this wannabe sith than the main character himself.
Now, this is not to say that the parts with Revan aren’t great, they are for the most part exceptional, it just feels like they are few and far between. For half this book he’s technically captured and sitting on his butt doing nothing. It was interesting to see Canderous and Bastila again, clearly they’ve grown, learning a bit about the Mandos backstory.I didn’t see that betrayal coming at the end, which felt a bit random. I understand that Scourge was a sith and to never trust them but it came out of nowhere. I feel also that Revan was significantly underpowered and I can understand the controversy surrounding the book to an extent. However, to say this book is mediocre just isn’t true. It is an exceptional book marred by certain aspects that don’t work and really only for a simple tie in for a game. I definitely recommend giving this a try.

Audiobook The Old Republic Deceived by Drew Karpyshyn
I’ve read more Star Wars novels than I care to remember and no one captures the sheer power of a Sith or Jedi as much as Drew. Bane, Revan and The Emperor are legends without doubt in the Star Wars universe and I’d love to see them as a star wars story on the big screen. Another great read, depth of character and story meant I just kept on reading. Having read the Bane trilogy and loving it, I already had high hopes for Revan and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

If you’re a fan of the Knights of the Old Republic video game, you’ll definitely appreciate this book more than those unfamiliar with that story. I won’t detail the plot as I don’t want to ruin it, but it’s one of the better SW novels for sure.

I must admit im a big fan of Revan i would say hes one of my most favourite charecter’s of the star war’s franchise. Also the two knight’s of the old republic games were two of my all time favourite games ive ever played although the second one was a bit of a let down as they rushed the story toward’s the end and the game some how felt incomplete. So i was very eager to read this book and see how revans story panned out.I must say i loved the book i couldnt put it down i felt very satisfied on the whole with the book and for me personally i felt it sufficently told me what i wanted to know about revan, for example how he was turned to the darkside and how he won the mandalorian wars etc…The only down side to the book i would say was the ebrupt ending which does not give us a conclusion to revan’s story instead setting it up for the for the new pc game star wars the old republic.Which i felt was a bit of a cop out especialy if youve actualy played the old republic and see how badly revan is used in the game.On reading some other comments on this book i can understand how some people feel let down by this book as in the original games u could play revan as either a female or male charecter and choose his or her path good or bad and this book chooses a very liniear path in that sense. If your a big revan fan or just a fan of the old repulicera i would definatly recommend this.
