If you are reading this because you’re a Kylie Scott fan, I’d suggest waiting for her next story. This narrative is dull and focuses more on fashion brands and luxury life than actual romance. The timeline also bugged me. Scotts other books narrow in on the antagonist by giving readers a rooted sense of the individual, helping us make a connection to her and work through problems and situations as if they were our own. This book immediately begins with the man sweeping a waitress off her feet, which doesn’t appeal. The usual spark that builds up to passion isn’t there. The concept of the man not being interested in sleeping with the woman was another piece of the storyline that didn’t work for me. This book just doesn’t compare to Scott’s previous works. If I read it compared to the others without background information I would assume it was the first thing she’d written and the other books came later in her career.

I’m just not convinced by the characters, they are interesting and well written, but I’m just not completely buying the romance. I was completely into the connection while they were both poor, but once the power dynamics changed due to money it was no longer obvious why they were together.
We were constantly being reminded that the heroine fell for him before she new about the money, but what we actually got was the hero not trying to equalise the power disparity the money causes or respect the heroines concerns and views. There is not compromise in the relationship, there is just agreement to conform. For example:
He asked she to uproot her life for him, she goes along with this.
He made all the decisions and told her when they weren’t and when they were going to have sex and she went along with it, even though this was not what she wanted.
He asked her to not share things about her life with people she cared about and again she agreed to this, even though it wasn’t what she wanted.
He chose and bought a house for them to live in, she had no input and she again she just went along with it.
He arranged for her to work for him and she agreed to this even though she wanted to be independent.
Is she actually a person/character with her own life, wants and needs or is she just a character reflection of him and his wants. All the above is justified by the author because there is talking and conversation, however this doesn’t change the fact that she compromises on everything and is talked into agreeing leaving her is isolated, financially dependant and not having equal power and say in the relationship.
