I bought this nearly two years ago, during a short stop in Changi on the way back to Australia from Europe. I started it on the plane, thinking I needed something to read and then promptly fell asleep most of the way back to Australia. For some reason I did not return to it until a few weeks back. It had been on my unread books list for some time, and I don’t know why I did get around to it.
Coming into a series at the third novel has some disadvantages, but none that detract from the overall enjoyment. The main characters of Nic Costa, Gianni Peroni and Leo Falcone, the police, are well drawn and interesting. The story unfolds while Rome is in the grip of an extraordinary blizzard, just before Christmas. There is a murder in the Pantheon that quickly involves the presence of the FBI, because the victim and perpetrator are American.
This is not a short book, but for the most part the writing, characterisation and plotting is engaging. The solution is a very slow reveal, which might make one impatient, if it were not for how youngest drawn into the world of Nic, Gianni and Leo. That is the best part of the book. It makes up for the weakest part of the book, the time spent on the psychology of the serial killer they are all hunting. I will not say more, otherwise there will be spoilers.

The Sacred Cut audiobook in series Nic Costa
David Hewson can spin a tale. Excellent mystery. I love his two italian Detectives. You don’t need to read the previous Nick Costa mysteries to read this one. This is a good starting place. i would read this one before the ones that come after this. Chacterers are introduced in this one.
I just finished this book and am immediately starting another Nic Costa novel. I’m not reading them in order of publication, but I enjoy each one more than the last.
I realize not everyone likes the same thing, but I cannot understand the criticisms leveled at this novel. Poor writing? Come on, Hewson is one of the most literate crime writers working today–certainly on a level with Donna Leon and Ian Rankin (to both of whom he’s been compared). Uninteresting characters? Please. Hewson takes the time to develop each character so that by the end of the novel you feel you really know them. Confusing plot? Well, a police procedural is supposed to have an intriguing story line that twists and turns, and Hewson’s novels certainly exemplify this, but there’s nothing confusing about the plots; when everything is revealed, all makes perfect sense. Rome not brought to life vividly enough? This accusation is so ridiculous I won’t comment upon it, except to say that if you’ve been to Rome and seen the places Hewson describes, you realize how accurate and compelling his descriptions are; when I read his prose I feel as if I’m back there. Slow moving? Well, compared to American crime writers, maybe so, but that’s just because Hewson takes the time to bring his characters to life instead of showing us cardboard figures frantically scrambling about.

Audiobook The Sacred Cut by David Hewson
I’m working on the last book now and the only disappointment I have is there isn’t another in the series. Another strong plot with believable characters and fast paced action. I’ll have to try some of Hewson’s non-Costa books to see if they have the same strength of plot and character development.
Discovered by chance “a season for the dead” and enjoyed the characters: they are “real”, complex, they hurt (and they’re hurt), they laugh, they love, they die… and Rome is a character on its own. So went on to buy “The Villa of Mysteries”… and that’s it: I am hooked! Sacred Cut is the 3rd in a serie that gets better and better.
Hewson’s writing is engrossing. Early in the series, the characters will win you over and by this book, A Sacred Cut, their trials and tribulations really matter to you. That makes this dangerous, intriguing, multi-layer mystery all the more enjoyable.

Audio The Sacred Cut narrated by Sean Baker
I wish I had started the David Hewson books with Nic Costa etc from the start but I am catching up rapidly! His descriptions of Rome as the crimes are committed are gentle and not overdone like some authors. The characters are like a family and gel so well together. You feel as if you could meander through the streets and recognise the buildings. I won’t go into details as others are so much better at it but suffice to say that I can hardly wait for the next one. Thoroughly enjoyable reading that’s hard to put down.
I love David Hewsons writing and the Nic Costa books, this doesn’t dissapoint and is a great addition to my collection. His books are always well written with a great and unusual storyline and with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing.

I find the Nic Costa series of novels fascinating – and they get better as they develop. I started by finding “Fallen Angel” in my local library, but since then have been buying the books in sequence on Kindle – but have taken a rest just now (library books overdue!)
