The World of Critical Role

The artwork is beautiful but the reason its getting three stars is because there isnt anything really new. As a critter, Ive watched all CR content from the main game to Between the Sheets and I even listened to All Work No Play before it was a show. I was hoping to learn more behind the scenes stories, maybe learn about taking the risks theyve taken to be where they are or hear just funny stories that have gone unheard. Instead its character profiles, maps and background on the world/game. Still cool but Im already into the show, I know that stuff!

If youre a fan, youll love these behind-the-scenes glimpses into the show and its creators. But be warned, if you arent caught up on both campaign one and two, you will 100% get spoiled. Its got spoilers through the entirety of campaign one and through at least episode 97 of campaign 2.

I loved Mary Elizibeth McGlynn’s narration. She loves CR and is good friends with the cast and her love of the material shows through. The book is a fantastic overview and it also provides a pretty solid intro to what Dungeons and Dragons is and what it can be for anyone who doesn’t know already or who only knows the nonsense that floated around in the 80s about it. As a long-time player and DM myself I found a lot of useful and instructive perspectives about the game itself, through the lens of Critical Role. It’s an encomium, not an expose, which is why it’s so long. The cast is such an amazing group of people and it shows in everything they do.

The print shop/binder did a pretty dirty job.

There is a chunk taken out of part of it. The binding got creased/bunched up at one point. Where the binding got bunched, the book doesn’t open flat without putting a gentle wave on the page, making the reader use extra force to keep the book open. See photos for details.

Minor shipping damage to one corner, which I’d ordinarily ignore, but with the other above issues, it just feels insulting. I’ve grown accustomed to the TOP NOTCH quality of items from the Critical Role store, so this is quite the disappointment.

Loved it! The insight into the characters and the players behind them, as well as the peak behind the curtain of the show and story was a complete joy to read. I recommend it to any fan of the show and also any lover of D&D. It really shows just why Critical Role is so popular. The people that helm it love storytelling, and they love making the world a better place through that story.
