True West

I loved this audiobook! It was actually the first original I listened to. Love Kit and Johnny, so this was the next best thing to being there at the actual play in London.

The good news for True West is….it is a blissfully short listen. The bad news? It’s a better play than it is something to strictly listen to. This should have stayed a play, it works in that format because you have the visual cues to play off of as the characters constantly talk over one another. But in a format where you simply are listening to what is happening on stage it just doesn’t work. All of the sound effects that are used in the stage production become distracting and tiresome and honestly….I was ready to walk out of a theater because I didn’t like either of the characters. That’s not to say the actors were’t good…they were, I just found the subject matter irritating and annoying and all of the yelling between the characters really grated on my nerves. Something, that once again would work in a stage production….didn’t work when being yelled directly into my ears.

Go see this on stage, you’ll probably enjoy it….but I’d pass on the audiobook.

I’m also going to add that I find most of the Audible produced content “Audible Productions” are seriously over produced. I felt the same way with “West Cork” as well….too many sound-effects end up being a distraction that just kill an audiobook.

Two brothers, sibling rivalry, a dysfunctional family, both wanting the life the other has as they don’t seem happy with their own, and they end up fighting over a manuscript while trying to soothe their inner struggles with alcohol. The story takes place in the desert at their Mother’s house while she is away in Alaska and the brothers fight and talk about killing each other a few times. I always enjoy reading, listening to, and watching plays and this one had a few laughs and the end had me paying close attention as the Brothers finally realise what really is making them unhappy.

My book jar picked this audiobook for me to listen to this month. This is an Audible Original. The story was different and I like that it was different from the Bible story of Cain and Abel and that it was set in California but there was a lot of yelling in this. There was a lot of drama and I dont understand what they were fighting about but they have a dysfunctional relationship. This was interesting and different but I wouldnt listen to it again.

It was easy to listen to on my phone.
