This book was okay. I won’t be recommending it to family and friends. Nothing ever really happens. I kept waiting for something to happen but nope, never occurred. It is not a bad book, but the ending left a lot to be desired; I did not like the writing from the perspective of the women of the neighborhood. About half way in, I started skimming pages. The book held much promise but never fleshed out why most of the girls were like they were…no hints as to why they’d blindly follow a man they didn’t know. Not for me.

We Can Only Save Ourselves is a haunting examination of family, society, adolescence, and how utterly mysterious we all are to each other.
This story is told from the point of view of the collective mothers of a nice suburban neighborhood in the mid-twentieth century as one of their daughters falls under the sway of a (Charlie Manson-esque) charismatic cult leader.
The prose is beautiful, lyrical, and dreamlike. Wisdom expertly cultivates a tone of unease and disquiet that permeates the text and lends an ominous quality to even the most mundane events. It’s really a masterful piece of work.

Audiobook We Can Only Save Ourselves by Alison Wisdom
LOVED this book. The characters immediately grab your attention and steer you through the story. I found myself sympathizing and understanding each character….even the ones I disliked. The book managed to transport me to a place that seemed utterly unfamiliar and eerie, yet completely relatable. The writing propels you from sentence to sentence making it hard to put down! Highly recommend. I think I’ll be listening to the audiobook next.

Such a great book! Beautifully written, and the perfect amount of hope and heartbreak. If youre a fan of books like The Girls and Virgin Suicides, youll love this. A must read!

I could not put this book down–it pulls the reader in so intimately and intensely. The writing style is amazing, and the author subtly reveals pieces of each character that are disturbing and relatable at the same time. I cannot wait for future works.
