I am very much a J. A. Jance fan. I love her Brady series and like her Beaumont series almost as much. I find her Ali Reynolds books a little too contrived. The character fluctuates a little too much between being foolhardy to the point of stupidity and scared to death. And what seems unrealustic to me is that the only times she seems really frightened occur when she is surrounded by protection whereas she seemingly fearlessly walks into situation after situation in which common sense would tell a person they are dangerous – not to mention the fact that in most cases she has been warned they are dangerous. I realize such occurances are part of the plot but it is why events in the Ali Reynolds books seem contrived. I also find the blog entries a bit tiresome.

Web of Evil audiobook in series Ali Reynolds

I enjoyed the first book in this series so I was looking forward to an enjoyable read. The action kept my attention for a while but I was more than half way through when I realized this book was, well, I hate to say this, but really terrible. I love JP Beaumont series and enjoyed the Brady series. Both are top notch with developed characters the reader can respect and plots that are both exciting and believable. This 2nd installment of the Ali Reynolds is full of wholly unrealistic plot turns and details and idiotic people who we don\’t like doing idiotic things. I finally put the book without finishing it.

Audiobook Web of Evil by J. A. Jance

J.A Jance has become one of my favorite, preferred authors. The Ali Reynolds series is quickly becoming my favorite series of the four she has written: J.P. Beaumont (Seattle, WA Policeman Detective) was her first series, Joanne Brady (Cochise Country, AZ Sheriff; my favorite and my introduction to the southwest when I moved to Cochise County, AZ 3 years ago), and the Walker Family (Pima County (Tucson), AZ Sheriff) is her fourth series are all excellent. Having said that, it would be very difficult for me to decide which of the four series is my favorite. I supposed the favorite would have to be whichever series Jances\’ latest book is from. Can\’t wait to read more! My only other favorite, preferred authors is Kathy Reichs, author of the \”Temperance Brennan\” or \”Bones\” series, which I would assume most TV watchers and medical/forensic mystery readers know of. She writes several series as well: Virals (teenage mysteries)\’ Eposure, Code and Seizure. As both a retired U.S. Army NCO and forensic psychologist, I find these series extremely engrossing and highly enjoyable. I would recommend them to anyone who has an interest in mystery stories. The Reich series for medical/forensic/police mysteries and J.A. Jance for non-standard Sheriff/police mysteries. They are truly worth your time and energy. And, on Kindle especially, the price is inconsequential.

Audio Web of Evil narrated by Kris Faulkner

This was a disappointment. After I read this, I wondered if Jance used a ghost writer. Many authors, including Jance (or ghost writer?) do very little research on firearms. Taking a handgun to California without following some strict requirements, is illegal and can get you arrested. Carrying one concealed without one of the few permits, which are not issued to non-residents, WILL get you arrested. The plot was quite promising until about three-fourths of the way through the book. The shootout in the restaurant was more like a scene from a Grade B cops and robbers movie. There were many inconsistencies and unlikely turns in the plot. The reader will find them obvious, if they read the book. I suggest reading her Joanna Brady novels first, as well as the early JP Beaumont novels. I\’m giving it three stars — \”It was okay\” — for the plot, altho it wasn\’t well developed. And that\’s half a star too much.

This book was read after reading a later one of the Ali Reynolds series. At the end of that story, I liked the character even though I thought she was a bit of a space cadet. So, figuring it would be enjoyable to read the series from the beginning, I looked forward to this episode in the life of a rather impetuous young woman. Impetuous is not the right adjective for Ali. Dumb is! Although this story does keep you engrosse and the characters interact well, this girl is as dumb as a bag of rocks. She seems to care about every down-trodden person on the face of this earth, but doesn\’t even blink when putting her own family in harm\’s way.(oops, she does occasionally show a little pang of guilt) who would rather see the bad guys captured instead of making sure their son was ok? The action and plot were enthralling as J. A. Jance only knows how. I will probably read more of this series because they do hold my attention. I can only hope Ali thinks before she leaps, or at least lets someone know she\’s leaping.
