look no offense to the author. this has nothing to do with you. i respect you. your writing style is great and you put a lot of info in this book which is why i had to read it for my class. but heres the deal. i needed this book for my class (as you can see in the sentence above). and let me tell you future students of a east asian history lecture class: 1. dont take a class with that name title. ever. and 2. if you are and your struggling and then you see you still have to read this book for the course..go ahead and drop kick that bitch right off your schedule. its not worth it ladies its really not. i feel like i had to warn the people on amazon too just in case you arent some historian or teacher that can withstand a class like this. but anyway yea, the book is fine seemed kinda interesting. i tried to read it all in two days before an exam..didnt work and couldnt stay focus after half a page. thats how i am with most history books too. i still have the book though, by library didnt want to buy it from me so who knows, maybe ill turn 50 one day and want to read it. but you guys enjoy.

I assign this book as summer reading for my AP World History class. It is a valuable eye opener to students who are used to seeing only the Western perspective on the world. It also provides a valuable view on the continuity of culture in the region and how that culture contrasts with and come into conflict with the Western view. Great book.

Audiobook When Asia Was the World by Stewart Gordon

A nice introduction into the well traveled Asia of long ago. Almost every chapter of this concise book gives the story of someone who left home, journeying afar for religious, business, military or other reasons.

Stewart Gordon keeps the stories on point, while presenting a reader fresh insights into many interesting cultural and historical facts, such as the role silk robes enjoyed in the ceremonies of the day and background to the spice trade.

The book closes with a handy section giving suggestions for further reading.

This book gave a great perspective on the Asian world from 500 to 1500 CE. It follows different people, mostly traders, on their travels traversing most of Asia. It can get a little boring at times when the author decides to include an ancient recipe for meat or something, but otherwise it’s pretty easy to follow and gives a lot of detail. I particularly enjoyed the chapter describing the contents of a sunken ship.
