When Did You Last See Your Father?

This was my first disappointment with Jodi Taylor’s writing. The story is supposed to be in Leon’s voice–lots of clipped, simple sentences. It’s not particularly convincing. In the first third, he tells the story of his life, which is unrelated to the rest of this novella other than one line. Also, it’s background her readers already know. Basic third-person narration would have worked better.
Fortunately, there is one central scene containing typical Taylor/St. Mary’s antic comedy. It’s followed by a somewhat over-extended scene of explanations between Max and Leon. All in all, definitely not her best.

The author states she thought of this story as she was drifting off to sleep and then had to turn the lights back on and start writing it. When you’ve finished, you’ll understand why. No tricksy plots or bizarre humor, this is a very human story about friends closing ranks. It is fantastic!

I loved this little story. I really like the more in-depth background about Leo’s life (this story is told from his POV) and how he grew up. It goes through his relationship with his ex-wife and children, what happened to them and how he dealt with it, and finally how he came to be at St. Marys. We know some of this already, but it’s been fleshed out just a bit more here.

I lOVED how everyone at St. Marys came together to protect Max and Matthew from her scheming father and how they so thoroughly ruined his life. I don’t think we’ll ever be seeing him again. Now if only they could just get rid of Clive Ronan….

What would you do if you met the very wealthy, influential man who molested your wife when she was a child and he has come to claim it would be better if your son came to live with him?

The easy answer would be murder or a big fight for most. But this is Leon and St Marys and there is never going to be any solution that simple when that group is involved. This is a very funny tale of how Leon and a few of the cast of St Marys banded together to dish out our favorite dish served cold. Revenge.

This is short but sweet and I loved that Max finally got some kind of payback against her father from the family she chose.

There are a few other random scenes that were a little funny but didnt really belong in the books and just showed this reader that Jodi Taylor lives in this world with these crazy characters that are always doing funny things and causing mischief.

Another wonderful St. Marys romp by Ms. Jody. This ones about Maxs father coming to visit. It was supposed to be about Leon meeting Mr. Max, but in actuality, they never meet. Nope, Leon sees Mr. Max from afar, thats about it.

I highly recommend the St. Marys stories, the novels as well as short stories. Theyre written very well (no grammatical or spelling errors) and give the reader a welcome distraction to our relatively mundane lives. And theyll make you laugh, sometimes to the point of leakage .
