I admit to binge reading John Connolly’s Charlie Parker series and no other mystery writer’s work since reading Book 1 of the series, “Every Dead Thing”. Connolly writes extremely well. He has no peer, in my opinion. He is excels at weaving interesting history, generally cult-related, the supernatural and local color in New England towns, and more recently in West Virginia into gripping tales. “The Whisperers” is number 15 of the 16 book series and starts to bring closure to the fates of some of the characters and dark forces that have surrounded Charlie Parker, P.I., from the first book of the series. Book 15 moves a little slower than many of the earlier books, but so does Charlie Parker after all has been through. But still a good read.

Whisperers series Charlie Parker

Just finished this incredibly good read. I read the first seven Parker books in order, then skipped to The Burning Soul, then read The Woman in the Woods. The Whisperers excelled as one of Connolly’s very best detective-supernatural tales. I could hardly put it down. Ancient museum artifacts. The supernatural. Saying anymore would give the story away, but after Nocturnes, this is my favorite Connolly book. So far.

Audiobook Whisperers by John Connolly

As a fan of John Connelly I was somewhat disappointed in this book. That is not to say it was totally unenjoyable, I simply know he can do much better. Rather than dwell on the flaws of the book I would rather leave it and wait for his next. If you read the prologue you’ll know that this book was somewhat controversial with his publishing team and I can understand why. If you, like me, are a fan, read it so you better understand why his other books are so good. If you are new to this author read an earlier Charlie Parker book(s) to get the full flavor and appreciation of this fine writer.

I am a loyal fan of Connolly’s Charlie Parker novels. He has created compelling characters and an ever-so-slightly twisted world that draws you back time and again. Unfortunately this entry did not have the same pep, pace or suspense of its predecessors. One would think that enigmatic artifacts looted during the recent Iraqi conflict would provide great background, however, the book is highly procedural and linear versus the near irreverence and smokey atmosphere of the previous entries. He does supply some interesting facts on the war in Iraq including the Stryker units, the neat mythical “Juba” sniper, and returning soldiers’ struggles back home. In short, there was no real mystery here so Connolly ends up leaning too much on the mystical and horror aspects of his writing and this throws the book off balance when compared with his previous and more nuanced books.
