I Am These Truths

Sunny Hostin is a wonderful person with a beautiful story to tell. She does give us her full truth throughout this book. I think that Sunny acquiesces to respectability politics in the telling of her story which is hard for me as more unvarnished soul to understand but I appreciate that Sunny’s style is her own. This was a pleasurable read and I was able to learn something more about someone who I think is a good egg. I love her on the View and now I can fully respect her because of her story told in her own words.

I bought this book because I started watching The View recently and was impressed by Sunny’s composure and clarity whenever she spoke and the truth of her words was sobering.
I grew up in Birmingham during the late fifties early sixties. I was raised Catholic and walked to Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic school with my youngest sister. I was 12 when the 16th Ave Street Baptist Church was bombed. I couldn’t understand why anyone would bomb a church. My dad said it was because they were the N word. My mom confirmed for me that it WAS wrong and my catechism was correct, we are ALL the children of God, red, yellow, blue, brown, green, black, orange or purple. That’s how I raised my kids and I am so proud of them both for how they have handled the prejudices they have faced. Sunny’s fear for her children is heartbreaking and ANGRY-making: No woman should have that fear in this country and too many do. One can only hope that the new batch of young people will go on to change the law and attitudes so that we ALL may be free. Sunny is my new hero!! Long may she fight!!!

Sunny Hostins memoir I Am These Truths kept me up way too late reading! I was fascinated to learn about her background, both as a gifted child and as a person balancing between two cultures – African American and Puerto Rican. She has a wonderful knack for writing compelling prose. Anyone who is interested in law and/or journalism will love this book.

Sunnys story is incredibly inspiring. The book is a moving exploration of her upbringing and the intertwined currents of racism and sexism that continue to plague our country. I couldnt put it down! More timely than ever, this is a must-read.

I enjoyed the candid story telling style of this book. I appreciate the opportunity to gain insight into what life is like for a multi- race woman. As a Black woman, my life has and career had many similar challenges on the journey to becoming a successful professional. I related to many of the feelings and struggles Sunny experienced. I cant imagine adding multiple race identities to an already difficult existence in a world that finds acknowledging our value difficult. Thank you Sunny for sharing your truth with me, it helped me to validate that my experiences in Corporate America are present in all industries. Systemic racism is like uprooting a 400 plus year old tree; we may never find all the roots but we can stop the roots from continuing to grow when we cut the tree down and dig up the roots as we find them.
