Coven Mitt (Widow’s Bay #2)

Rebecca Regnier showed up this week as a guest author for our Facebook group PWF (Paranormal Women Fiction). Her first book on this series was free and I ended up downloading it. It was so good, I bought the rest of the books and I just finished book 2.

Coven Mitt takes us back to Widows Bay and The Crones trying their best to train the new coven. This book focuses on Marzies journey to understand the Yooper Naturals while she balances a house renovation, her new job at Your U.P. News, another murder case and a rogue vampire. There are other side stories that, I guess, we will know more in other installments. However, the story is fast, full of action, and all the sarcasm you can have in the form of Agnes, Marzies fashionista cat.

Well, time to start book 3!

Two plot lines. One rogue vampire preying on the innocent. One dead grandfather of one of the new Widow’s Bay witches. Something evil this way comes, so the crones must get the younger witches up to snuff. I am really liking how this series is coming along. I like the mix of old with middle aged. In Widow’s Bay, witches start to strengthen in power when they reach forty, single or widowed, with no or grown children. The crones are near 100 years old. And they are running out of time to teach the generation that will take over to protect their town. The gate is open and paranormal s are flooding in. Most belong there, but some, like the rogue vampire, must be dealt with.

As the blurb indicates, another crime has to be solved.
There are more things going on than one crime, we learn more in this book about the various magical practices prevalent in the town.
Apparently the witches’ magical abilities peak when they are no longer encumbered by husbands or needy children, and since times are becoming difficult many unknowingly need the help of the witches doing their magic on the quiet.

We can in-between read the reports our reporter witch sends to her boss about happenings with a bit of magic involved, which fact she cleverly leaves out

This book got 5 stars mainly because of the characters. The characters are very well developed and a more likable kooky bunch can not be found elsewhere. The plot is strong and the pacing is just right. Not too heavy on the romantic stuff, which I like, because the focus is on the strong independent women of Widows Bay. They are quite endearing. Looking forward to more by this author.

I just bought the third book in the Widow’s Bay Series as soon as it was available. This is a fun and imaginative series with engaging characters and premise. Love the setting too, possibly more so because I am a former Michigander who is familiar with the beauty of the state’s Upper Peninsula. Also, the talented author is a resident of the town I was born and raised in. Both these points made me want to read the first book in the series “Resting Witch Face” but once I did, I was hooked no matter the setting and author’s location. Book 4 comes out in June, and I’m already counting the days.
