Craig Alanson brings to us another journey of the Flying Dutchman; the ship has one primary goal i.e to protect the earth. Aliens who wanted to invade the earth are long gone now but still the ship surveys around the galaxy to check that whether the enemies are planning further or not.
One of the missions in outer space slips a little during this time and the Flying Dutchman gets lost. Instead of worrying about the Thuranin attack, the crew starts thinking about its safety because in their absence the enemy can pounce anytime. The last mission which they received from the earth was related to the troops that have landed on the planet Paradise.

Those troops were stranded on the planet after they were ambushed by the inhabitants of that planet. Now the matter has become a thing of the past and Flying Dutchman’s main focus is to establish contact with the earth as early as possible. If the contact is not made there might be catastrophic results for the human race. Luckily the ship’s captain has something more powerful than the machines i.e the alien they have named Al. Al is blessed with the power of sight to see the future but when the captain asks Al about the fate of earth the answer is troubling.
Brushfire depicted such situations but here darkness spreads in the mind more than ever. R.C. Bray narrates the shattering hopes of the crew in space where they can do nothing except hoping for a miracle. Scenes and feelings also give a picture same as we observed in Critical Mass but this is a different fight in which the member of Flying Dutchman get engaged. Getting out is compulsory for them if they want to continue their mission of saving the planet.
