Firstly one noteworthy thing in this book is that it is a different Hugh that we meet in the story. During the previous missions, the hero was performing well but at the same time, he was trying to run away from danger and trouble. Though he failed in running away his mind was more on survival rather than the war. A Traitor in Skyhold and The Lost City of Ithos was not about such a big war that we are going to witness this time.

On this rare occasion, Hugh is not planning to run away because he thinks that protecting Skyhold is his duty now and he has to do anything to save it from the enemies that are bound to destroy it. Exile Splinter is stolen from the den of the enemy and that has made all of those evil powers mad with rage. No one in Skyhold can match the power of the upcoming enemy and they will not take anything rather they will just erase everyone from the face of the world. John Bierce has finally come up with the big war in which Hugh needs allies as many as possible.

Also, the hero along with his friends tries some magical techniques as well which have been banned because of some special reasons. This forbidden magic can give an extra edge to the heroes but it can also destroy them and they will have no chance to take part in the upcoming war.
