My god. I read this a long time ago. I was impressed but not overwhelmed. Second reading is overwhelming. Vernor Vinge. Co-creator of the ‘Technological singularity’ in his earlier books. Here he invents an insanely complicated and unlikely universe. With a multilayered plot that is impossible to understand or care much about.

And the greatest aliens in any science fiction book ever. Not even close. The wolves. Oh my God. Completely original. Completely brilliant. Awesomely well thought through. The Fire Upon The Deep is what you get when a true generational genius writes a sci-fi novel.

I totally wished at all points that the parts of the book that didn’t have anything to do with the wolves simply went away. Who cares. But these wolves are astonishing. Makes all aliens created by all other science fiction writers seem entirely trivial, boring, bug-eyed monsters of one sort or another by comparison

A Fire Upon the Deep audiobook Series Zones of Thought

This book had so much more detail and nuance than you would expect from a standard sci-fi space epic. At times the detail and the wandering was a bit irritating, but I found that as it all came together, there was so much to the story and the characters that I found it very satisfying. There are even some moments when one character chuckled with no explanation, but you totally got the joke. Definitely worth a read

Audiobook A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge

Before turning into a ticking time clock race, the book touches on the nature of individuality, how said individuality would work in a society with joint minds, the repercussions of history, and the fragility of planning and succession. The aliens are satisfactorily unique, with the initial simplifications of alien species as “dog-like” or “fern-like” giving way to anatomical details that further remove the alien from a familiar idea. The method of FTL travel was also a nice variant, confining the mechanics of space battles in a distinct way. The tensions between the characters last deep into the story, and are generally well conveyed. The events and consequences are huge, and the author does not pull any punches in letting the effects play out.

Unfortunately the goal of the penultimate battle, kept secret from even the strategist, did not need to be a secret at all in story (or could have been a more-tailored concealment), but was more a trick to maintain the narrative tension. A key off-page event near the end was also frustrating and anti-climactic. With the number of characters, a few get short shrift, including a few key to the story.

Audio A Fire Upon the Deep narrated by Peter Larkin

3/5 • There’s no question that this book contains some remarkable ideas; that’s where its strengths lie. The Zones of Thought concept is fascinating and the creation of the Tines is a notable feat. I was looking forward to these ideas being fleshed out in an interesting way, but this is where Vinge only partially delivers. This is “space opera”, which is traditionally grand in scale, and the story arc that relates to our heroes’ quest to save the galaxy is big and brassy and full of daring-do. The parallel arc that takes place on the Tines’ world is less expansive and full of murky characters bent on misdeeds. So far so good. However, I found the mid-third of this novel to be quite heavy-going. The events taking place on the Tines’ world were far less engaging than those taking place out amongst the stars and much of this mid-section felt drawn-out and padded. I found the behaviour of the “two-legs” to be unconvincing and had difficulty sympathizing with them. Some of this may be due to Vinge’s writing style, which is reminiscent of space operas written 50 years earlier. Frankly, his prose is quite crude and it actually made me cringe at times. Unfortunately this influenced the way I feel about this book – Vinge’s writing doesn’t do justice to his ideas, which is a shame.

It took me a while to get into this book as I’m not a fan of fantasy and it felt more fantasy than sci-fi to begin with, though this changed as I persisted. I also struggle a lot with authors that use a bunch of book- (or world-) specific words that have not been well defined, as this author does. Finally I also struggle to follow when there are more than a handful of characters and this book had a ton of characters.

But I’m glad I persisted as the world described has a huge amount of variety and is truly immersive in a way I’ve not really come across before. You really do feel like you start to understand this huge universe of different cultures, people and aliens that are all existing, trading and fighting their way through the millienia even as more powerful intelligences carry on in planes of existence beyond our level of intelligence. And then you’re whipped down to specific worlds where you follow individual characters as they live their more mundane lives and fight their own microscopic battles amongst their own people. And then it all somehow all comes together as the story reaches its climax and conclusion. It’s truly an impressive work.
