Alibi Jones and The Sunrise of Hur (The Adventures of Alibi Jones)

This book is the second in the Alibi Jones series, but you won’t have to read the first book for this to be a good read (and make sense!). Having read Mike’s work for many years, I have seen his writing progress to a level as good as many commercial authors.

This book follows Alibi as he tries to free 2 of his friends from captivity. The plot moves right along, and while the technical details are not described to death, you won’t have a problem with advanced technology being presented as just magically working. The story is well written, and you will lose yourself in the characters as they struggle with personal issues while trying to do the right thing. Without giving spoilers, the ending will leave you wanting more.

What a wondeful space opera, we have a former soap opera star turned gun/hand for hire, we have a cat-like alien race, we have a planetary jail break, we have an ancient artifact of a powerful and dangerous (almost) gone race…

Fans of John Ringo, Mike Shepherd, or any good old-fashioned space opera should love this story!

Alibi Jones and the Sunrise of Hur offers the reader an action-adventure in the style of the golden age of sci-fi. And based on that criteria, it succeeds. Once past the first few chapters, the action speeds along and the reader will find themselves engaged in the story of Alibi and his sometimes companions as they hop around the galaxy from trial to trial. It may not be innovative but it is a fun read that entertains.

Pros:
Page-turner. The action moves along and holds the reader.
Authentic: The novel knows what it is trying to be and never tries to do more.
Characters: Although the characters are fairly archetypal of the genre, there is enough to distinguish them and make them come alive. They are familiar but also just off kilter enough from your expectations to keep them interesting.

Cons:
Could use a final edit. Some typos and repeated phrases.
Not a hugely original story.
Seems like reading the first book in the series would provide a better experience to understanding the characters and their world.
