I read the entire Lydmouth Crime series and enjoyed it as well a several others written by Andrew Taylor. To me his name on the cover is a guarantee the book will be memorable. He is a great story teller who captures specific periods in history in which to place each story. The Lydmouth series takes place in the 1950s in Wales.

Please tell me this series was written when Andrew Taylor, now an excellent and well-respected author, was about 12! Everyone had gleaming false or long yellow teeth, every woman had permed hair, so many people spoke into the space between two other people and there were irregular quadrilaterals everywhere. Chronological anomalies, inaccuracies, inconsistencies, grammatical errors was there no copy editor, proof reader? Thickset eyes for heavens sake! Everyone was small, I wonder if Taylor is tiny too. Why would successive hotel manager employ a dirty, smelly, sweaty man wearing food-stained clothes as a receptionist? They spent an inordinate amount of time looking for owners names in hats and shoes! And the grammar: She wasnt sure whom she was talking to! I actually thought Call the Dying was better until in one paragraph alone there was no way HQ could get in touch with him assuming they remembered his existence. But a couple of paragraphs later: if the escapee had used another route, they might not remember to let him know. And Jock managed to get a false bank account as well as forged driving licence. Oh, please!
