\”Complicate Me\” is the first book in M. Robinson\’s new series The Good Ol\’ Boys. While it is being categorized in the contemporary romance genre, it can also be deemed as a new adult, or a coming of age read. \”Complicate Me\” is the story of Alexandra (Alex), and Lucas, two childhood friends with a adoration and love for each other that changes after they share an innocent first kiss. A friendship that was once playful and protective, becomes complicated as Lucas and Alex are not only dealing with their feelings for each other, but also the emotional, mental and physical pressures of maturing. The story takes place in Oak Island, North Carolina, which is described as one of those small towns, where everyone in the community knows each other and are life long friends. The town is beautifully and vividly described right from the very beginning, so that you can feel the spirit of this small town and characters that reside in it. While the first book focuses on the relationship/characters Lucas and Alex (Half Pint and Bo), you get to meet the rest of the \”good ol\’ boys\” and get an idea of the close bond that they have with each other. They share a common role as protector to Alex, who is more like their baby sister, than their tag along, tomboyish friend. It truly is a beautiful introduction. \”Complicate Me\” will give you \”all the feels\”, as it is a very emotional read, full of angst. It\’s characters and their situations are relatable and speak to all of your emotions. You cannot help but to smile at the beauty and innocence of the friendship between Bo and Half Pint (Lucas and Alex\’s endearing nicknames for each other). They are adorable with their unfiltered declarations of love for each other. Because at that point in their lives, LOVE was just hanging out with their besties all day. One of my favorite moments is when Lucas asks Alex, if she likes him. She unequivocally, answers back, \”No, I love you.\” It is all so sweet and innocent. As the story progressed, I had moments of aggravation towards Lucas, your typical guy, doing stupid things and most times unintentionally hurting Alex. My heart bled for Alex for having to see and feel all of that. I was truly invested in these characters. In addition to that, there are other raw and tearful moments in \”Complicate Me\”. All I can say, is the tears were flowing throughout the entire read. The next day, I was spent emotionally and physically, because I decided to read it, in one sitting. All in all, \”Complicate Me\” is a crazy ride of emotions, THAT I ENJOYED! If the first book in The Good Ol\’ Boys Series, is any indication of the remainder of series, it will be amazing, and I will be anxiously awaiting the second book.

Awful. Why, you may ask? Let\’s start with the nickname Half-pint. It rolls off the tongue & has as much pizzazz as Three-cups. Four-inch. Two-pence. So bad. You get the idea. The male characters were possessive, obsessive, selfish, manipulative, emotionally abusive, misogynistic, sexist, ignorant, & creepy. None of the above in a good way, either. For example, after a guy knocks someone up (that he lost his virginity to years prior) he gets angry that the main character lost her virginity to someone else, because of a connection that her boyfriend has to her that he doesn\’t…as if nothing says \”no big deal\” like having a baby with someone else? The parents enabled & fostered this unhealthy behavior by letting the guy barge into the MCs room & yell at her for getting ready to go on a date, &…there are so many flaws it took over a year for me to finish this. I wish I was joking. Just stay away. There were more eye-rolling moments than anything else. If you dig that sort of thing…watch a Lifetime movie (which are Oscar worthy material compared to this teenage fever dream).

Audiobook Complicate Me: The Good Ol’ Boys (The Good Ol’ Boys #1) by M. Robinson

This book had so many issues Im not sure where to start. After I finished it, I checked the other reviews and saw so many were about Lucas being an a$$. Yes he was, but thats not the real problem. I am fine with not liking characters. They were all actually annoying at times but I was hooked on the storyline so I kept reading. My real problem was the writing and terrible editing. This book has so many incomplete sentences that it must have been intentionality written that way. Im just not sure why anyone would choose to chop up sentences like this. The wrong words are used. The sentences have extra words that shouldnt be there. The words bellowed and wallowed were used excessively and did not even make sense in some of the sentences. This could have been a good book with better editing. Yes you would still be annoyed and frustrated with the characters from time to time but that is acceptable with a decent storyline. I dont have to like all the characters to enjoy a book. I do expect it to flow better than this to make the reading more pleasurable.

Audio Complicate Me: The Good Ol’ Boys (The Good Ol’ Boys #1) narrated by Kyle Filippelli Lauren Sweet

I absolutely love these books although this is number 1 out of the books, didn\’t realise and had actually read number 3 first which is Dylan\’s story it blew me away and I went looking for more. So I already have a.bit of a connection with the characters in the book I know a bit of their background. The author has so cleverly wrote all of their story\’s as individuals keeping them along side but not giving the others story away too much. Half pint and bos story start from kids right up untill their older. So much goes on in each of their lives you wouldn\’t believe it\’s all one book. Such a good read. I\’m off to read Jacobs story!!

What I loved about this book is that it followed all the characters from childhood into adulthood. You felt like you really knew them and even understood why they made the choices they did, even the really bad ones!! And boy were there some bad choices! Especially by Lucas. Lucas, Lucas, Lucas – how could you get it so wrong while trying to get it so right?! It was a beautiful, frustrating, turbulent love story with strong characters, plenty of angst, plenty of romance and passion and awash with all the different forms of love: love for friends, for family and for lovers. But the bond between Alex and Lucas throughout the story, was truly amazing, at times heartbreaking, at times so frustrating you wanted to shake Lucas til his teeth rattled but at times oh so beautiful. A great book about childhood friendships, adolescent uncertainties, adult responsibilities and a love that transcends it all.
