Death in the Clouds

The publisher for this edition evidently didn\’t feel anything more than a crude optical scan of an old print version was required. They were wrong. This text is unreadable–words and sentences missing or corrupted, paragraphs chopped into pieces with inappropriate line breaks. Even a quick run through something like Grammarly would have identified some of these errors. A real human being would (should!) have immediately realized there were serious problems with the conversion of this text. Even at free, this book was way too expensive–it\’s unreadable and a total waste of time.

Oh dear! The kindle edition is riddled with problems. Unfortunately, the ebook was riddled with problems ranging from poor formatting, sentence fragments inserted randomly in other sentences, spelling, and wrong words, among others. All the errors made it a challenging mystery in its own right. The dialog was quaint and stilted and stereotyping awkward by today\’s standards. Still, the victim was a 1930s French, female loanshark, an unusual and strong female character even in today\’s writings. True to form, however, was a seemingly impossible murder with a surprising reveal. It is what the author is best known for making her the leading author of the Golden age of detective novels.

Agatha Christie is definitely not Dickens or Shakespeare, but her plots are incredible and reading her books has been great therapy for me during these long, dark, and lonely days of the COVID pandemic. \”Death in the Clouds\” is one of her early treasures. A note to Christie fans. The BBC David Suchet full-length film version is first rate. It is worth both reading the original book and watching the film version. There are some significant differences, but none that ruin the essential story. Both the book and the BBC film will delight fans of early commercial aviation.

I don\’t generally review books by well-known famous authors. I mean can I really add anything that hasn\’t been said? But, in this case, I will. I found this book to be different and enjoyable as are all of the books so far in the series. It was different in that it took place on an airplane ( I found the fact that the airline charged for the meal to be somewhat amusing). As for the mystery, it was solid. THere were lots of clues but it was hard to pick out the murderer for sure. She has a way of making things work out in the end, so I was not surprised by what happened. All in all a good read.

A classic whodunit mystery with the added bonus of Poirot under suspicion for murder! A high profile lady dies on a plane mid-air, and only those on the plane could have done it owing to the sensational method of murder. However, it seems to appear that those who could have done the deed lack the motive, and those who have the motive could not have done it. I really enjoyed this book, the circumstances of the first part reminds me a little bit of Murder on the Orient Express. However, it does differ because we do get to go off the flight and travel with Poirot to England and France as he investigates. No Hastings here, but we have our favorite Japp as well as several new characters who serves as his sidekicks throughout the book.
