Finding My Pack

Review #1

Finding My Pack audiobook free

This was a completely unique read for me. Very original, though with some very familiar aspects to it that made me love it all the more. I absolutely adored Kitten and the gang. They are just the most amazing group of ‘people.’ Fell in love with them all instantly.

Kitten has been a street kid all her life, never knowing the meaning of family and what it is to truly ‘belong.’ One final, horrible night on the street will lead to her finally finding a home and eight awesome guys to call ‘family.’ Though they have secrets and a complicated life, Kitten adores them all and would do anything to stay. Now that she’s found a place where she is loved, she will fight to the death to stay right where she is.

Now for my boys’ breakdown:

Tristan- He is the sweetheart of the group. His voice soothes Kitten like no one else’s can. He is incredibly kind, and from the first moment they meet, Kitten knows she can trust him. He is the chef of the family and his favorite color is Red.

Finn- Twin to Kellan, he is the scholar of the group. If there’s a question that needs answering, he’s the one to ask. His love of reading and carefree attitude suit Kitten well. He comes off as shy at times, and his favorite color is Orange.

Jace- He is the “Golden Boy” of the group. At first, he comes off as snobby and completely spoiled; He reminded me a lot of Jace from Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments. Like Cassy’s Jace, it’s not until he grows to adore Kitten as his brothers do that we see the sweet, caring guy behind the wealth and attitude. There is so much to find out about him; So many layers to his personality. Also, his favorite color(s) is Gold/Yellow (go figure).

Kellan- Twin of Finn, he is the Doctor of the group, patching up his pack and Kitten far more often than I’m sure he would like. We don’t get to see nearly enough of him (a doctor’s work is never finished), but he comes off as incredibly mature (not quite so carefree as his brother). He sees the hurt that Kitten hides and gently guides her through the process of releasing her past hurts, helping her to heal. His favorite color is Green; fitting, for the life that it symbolizes.

Logan- He is the fashionisto of the group. He has the style and playboy attitude to keep everyone looking as fabulous as the smiles that grace his family’s faces. He truly knows how to light up a room. He has a seemingly unnatural obsession with Kitten’s hair that I find absolutely adorable. He is so tender and playful, always cheering Kitten up when she’s down. And, his favorite color is Blue (love it)!

Reed- He is the artist of the group; much like Carrie Ann Ryan’s own Reed (Redwood Pack series). I found these two Reeds to be eerily similar, since they’re both the artists of their pack, they both have a sensitive side, and they both fall in love with a girl which they share with another male (or in this case, other males). He can read between the lines of everything Kitten says and does, delving headfirst into the depths of her being. He sees Kitten wholly for who she is. And, which I found pretty ironic, his favorite color is White.

Ash- He is like the enforcer of the group. Next to Remy, he is the strongest of the bunch; surly and with the determination to protect his family no matter the cost. Since having Kitten in his life, he has grown to live in the light, rather than always staying back in the shadows. He is also the in-house Mr. Fix-it, repairing anything that’s damaged; basically a mechanic. And, (surprise, surprise) his favorite color is Black. Love that giant teddy bear!

Remy- He is the Alpha of this pack. He oversees the overall well-being of his family. He is the leader and takes charge of every bad situation. He is not self-reliant, however. He knows how to accept the help of his pack-mates and his newest little girl, Kitten. He is a better leader for having her around and more involved personally with those living under the same roof as him. When the going gets tough, he’ll die protecting his family and their Kitten. Lastly, his favorite color is Grey.

I’m just so fascinated that their fave colors all span the color spectrum. It’s kind of funny, actually.

Anyways, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a book that advertised as being a “reverse harem.” I was intrigued from the start, and I am so in love with everything about this book. There wasn’t much in the way of action, besides the very beginning and end. But honestly, with everything that I was give from this book, I couldn’t be happier with all the time I spent entranced by this truly astounding group of characters.

I can hardly wait to see what marvels I will encounter in the next addition to this fantastic series.

Finding My Pack audiobook Series Shifters Unbound

I finally found a book that combines two of my favorite things: werewolves and reverse harem. Hell yes. This is Lane Whitt’s first book from what I can tell and she does a pretty good job of sucking in the reader and giving them a nice little emotional roller-coaster. Sure some of the writing could be better, and she could really use a couple rounds of editing but those things were easily overlooked because this is a self-published, first time book and I loved it. It looks like she plans on publishing this in physical form and the only thing I can say is if I were ever going to buy it in physical form it really needs to be picked over with a fine tooth comb by an editor. I know a lot of other people feel the same way about physical books. Once it’s in your hand it needs to be perfect. Digital versions can be edited and those edits reflected into already purchased copies. Once it’s in physical form there is no going back. It’s out there forever.

So about the first 25% of this book Kitten (I cringed at the name at first but it eventually grew on me) is unaware that the amazing hunky men that saved her are werewolves. It’s really no spoiler since the title of the book gives away that this has shifters in it and although these don’t seem to follow the same shifter style as my favorites (Laurell K Hamilton, Patricia Briggs, Kelly Armstrong etc) it was refreshing to read about something in a different style. In this book changed wolves are immortal and stronger than born ones, and the born wolves’ age slowly and are not immortal but have bigger numbers and packs. Female wolves are very rare as a virus or something all but wiped them out and human woman are hard to find that can survive the change into a werewolf. This information is important but during the first book we don’t really know why.

Each male gives Kitten individual attention. They all have very different, specific personalities. I won’t go through them all but it was very similar to C.L. Stone’s Ghost Bird series. Ash was like North, the brooding proctor. Kota like Finn, the shy smart one. Logan like Gabriel where he is all about fashion and style and helps the group looking stylish and put together. You get the idea. Speaking of similarities, although Kitten is essentially a street rat and never had a family she is extremely naive in a lot of things like Sang was. She does not know how to act around boys or sexual situations. This was fun but at the same time extremely annoying since all the boys just added her innocent naivete to the pile of things that make her irresistible. She was pretty close in going onto my Mary Sue list but I tried to keep an open mind throughout the book, even if she had a photographic memory and was able to figure skate like a pro and paint like an amazing artist. (Yea, ok I guess she’s a Mary Sue if you list it out like that. Oh well, I still liked it.)
Final Thoughts

You won’t get spoilers from me but be prepared to be left on a huge cliff hanger and screaming “WHAT THE FUDGE?!” The ending seemed disjointed and more like the ending of a chapter. I kept trying to scroll forward but there were no more pages. There was a lot going on in this first book and it took a while to process my thoughts for a review. At times it was campy with the way the men acted around Kitten and essentially fell head over heels instantly for her. Everything she did was perfect and amazing and I wanted it to just end. Other times it was amazing and filled with lightheartedness as we get to see Kitten grow and understand social queues from the boys. On occasion it was very NA with heated kisses and wild gropings and blunders of Kitten’s first experiences.

Would I recommend this book?

Yes, especially if you like reverse harem style books. I definitely think if you add it all up the good outweighs the bad and I will definitely be buying the next book when it comes out. Hopefully very soon because I want to pull my hair out and the way the first book ended.

Audiobook Finding My Pack by Cris Dukehart

I have some mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, it’s an incredibly compelling story with a FMC who has more depth than any other “Mary Sue” that I’ve read. It’s rare to find a character who is so inherently good while maintaining layers of realism. But on the other hand, the writing style is somewhat choppy and unsophisticated so that it seems anomalous with the feel of the story itself. The world building is solid, but the characterization of the guys in the harem is a little weak. With a harem of this size, it’s simply impossible to naturally get to know each guy any way other than superficially. There is a great foundation laid, however, and I expect that the character development will truly blossom in the next book. Regardless, I’ve enjoyed myself, and I don’t think that I could put this series down at this point even if I wanted to.

Audio Finding My Pack narrated by Cris Dukehart

I always read the reviews before I choose a book. Some said things that I try to avoid, but I’m a sucker for PNR’s where the heroine is sweet and innocent with no idea who/what she is, so I decided to give this one a try. Not gonna lie, the negative reviews were off, at least in my opinion. I laughed, I cried (happy tears, birthday party anyone?), and I would like to personally kick Adam in the naughty bits with steeltoed boots! Kitten and her “boys” have captured my attention and heart and I’m going to start book two as soon as I finish writing this. This book gave us lots of backstory for the characters, mainly Kitten’s, and the action really only started in the last few chapters. I’m looking forward to learning more ASAP. Pretty sure my weekend will be reading this series and not a lot more. I apologize to my family, but I’m invested now.

I really wanted to love this one. It came highly recommended but I had trouble connecting to them main character. I can’t even really pin point why, but Kitten was a bit of a ditz and I had difficulty with some of the finer points of her backstory. She seemed to be socially inept but we are supposed to believe that she survived on the streets alone without incident for 16 years? As far as reverse harem go, there are better ones out there.
