Andy Carpenter is an attorney from Paterson New Jersey. He lives alone with the best dog in the world, his golden retriever Tara. He is in a serious relationship with an ex cop, now private P.I Laurie.

He has become quite famous since his last trial defending Willie Miller which everyone considered a open and shut case. He also became very rich in the first book when he inherited 22 million from his father. It came as a complete surprise as he was unaware that his father had this much money stored away.

So at the start of this book, he is thinking about doing a new case. He wants it to be right for him and hasn’t decided on a new case yet. A visitor arrives at his office that confesses to a crime he committed against the murder of a policeman. He has confidentiality to tell his story to Andy. It repulses Andy and he does not want anything to do with this man. Later, another man is charged with the murder and Andy knows he could not have committed the murder as he had heard the visitor’s story. Andy even though he does not like the person charged takes his case as he knows he is innocent.

First Degree audiobook in series Carpenter Series

I don’t usually read “lawyer” books. They’re just not a genre I usually gravitate towards. I usually read authors like Kellerman and Sandford…I like Virgil Flowers and Alex Delaware. David Rosenfeld was an author who popped up in my suggested reading list. I took a chance and ordered the first Andy Carpenter book and liked it so well that I ordered the second book. I just finished that one and I liked it so much that I just bought the third book in the series. I didn’t look to see how many books there are in the series, but I’m pretty sure I’ll read them all. If I ever need a good lawyer, I’m gonna call Andy Carpenter!

Audiobook First Degree by David Rosenfelt

The Andy Carpenter series has been a found treasure for me. I first began reading Open and Shut because I saw the golden retriever on the cover. Being a golden lover, I checked it out and have loved the series. Each book has its own mystery and verve, and they all present an appealing array of characters with Andy Carpenter at the center. This book is indicative of the series overall by offering an entertaining, smartly written mystery with ongoing character development of likeable characters. It has suspense and for the most part a believable plot. And, of course, it features golden retrievers as well as other furry friends. I recommend this book and the series.

Audio First Degree narrated by Grover Gardner

Andy Carpenter’s quick wit, believable charm, sarcastic, funny retorts and generous heart make him a likeable defense attorney. Carpenter defends Laurie Collins, his detective-partner, and love of his life, whom is accused of first degree murder, in this of fast- paced courtroom thriller. The plot, exciting and detailed, contains many twists and turns.
“First Degree,” the second novel in the series, connects to the first, “Open and Shut,” through characters, humor and events. Tara, Andy’s golden retriever, stars a larger role in this story than in the first novel, and, the story includes an introduction to Cash, a homeless dog.
Rosenfelt nicely intertwines a theme of sensitivity towards animals into the plot.

The mystery was pretty solid but I didn’t much care for the main character. Lawyer Andy Carpenter was just too flippant. I also didn’t like that the story was told in the present tense.

And maybe SPOILER he shouldn’t have sent Laurie to check out the murder site (that the authorities hadn’t found yet) given her previous dealings with the murder victim. The problem with doing so wouldn’t have dawned on me, but I’m not a wily defense attorney.

I have read three from this series at this point and I find them delightful. The main characters are flawed but in the most charming ways. I would like for any of them to be my friend. The mystery is engrossing if sometimes a little far-fetched. Far-fetched is okay when it doesn’t push your ability to believe too far and Mr. Rosenfelt does it just enough to make it really interesting. I don’t like mysteries where the people I have grown to love are in mortal danger through most of the book because it forces me to go to the back of the book, in order to bear the suspense. While the characters are sometimes in danger it quickly passes so I can happily read on. I found no hackneyed or trite phrasing, in fact I discovered many new and delightful ways to describe a situation. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes warmhearted mysteries.
