This short story was quite engaging. I appreciated how it delved into the intricacies of Mars and Bobbie Draper’s background, even though the narrative didn’t primarily revolve around her. She emerged as one of the heroes towards the end, which added an exciting twist. Exploring her family life and their dynamics was a fun aspect of the story.

The character of David provided an interesting portrayal of parenting a high-achieving child while keeping a tight leash on them. It illustrated how external pressure and a lack of friends could push anyone into unfavorable circumstances, even in the best of times.

David’s realization that Leelee wasn’t interested in him, despite his heroic actions, highlighted his genuine nature. He remained a good-hearted person, unaffected by the situation.

Bobbie’s interaction with David and her awareness of his actions added depth to the story. Her journey of self-discovery through helping him find direction was truly inspiring.

The unresolved fate of Hutch, the manipulative figure who preyed on vulnerable individuals, left me wondering. His character exemplified the disturbing cycle of grooming and corruption, which sadly persists in various cultures and regions. The story wisely refrained from offering a miraculous solution to this problem, acknowledging the complex and persistent nature of such issues.

Addressing grooming and illegal activities is a daunting challenge, one that lacks quick or easy fixes. It’s uncertain whether a long-term, difficult solution exists to permanently combat these problems, as we, as a society, have not yet reached a level of enlightenment to provide definitive answers. However, it’s important that we continue the dialogue and work towards creating a safer world for all.

Audiobook Gods of Risk by James S. A. Corey

I highly recommend starting with the exceptional novel “Leviathan Wakes,” which serves as the inception point for this series. One of the standout features of this series is its commitment to portraying a “realistic” vision of the future, devoid of fantastical elements like warp drives, hyperdrives, shields, or tractor beams. In this universe, humanity has successfully colonized Mars, as well as various moons and asteroids within the solar system. The narrative genuinely immerses you in what the near future could plausibly be like. The level of intricate detail devoted to depicting life in these environments, including the challenges of different gravitational forces, solar radiation, and the constant threat of atmospheric loss, is truly impressive. When you combine these elements with compelling storytelling, you get “The Expanse.”

I concur with some of the other reviewers’ observations. It’s a relatively short read; I managed to finish it in a single sitting. Moreover, the narrative predominantly centers around a new character not previously featured in the series. Nonetheless, I’m awarding it a 5-star rating because, considering its value as a $3 novella, it offers an excellent reading experience. I’m also pleased with the way they’re expanding this series—major novels interwoven with shorter stories that provide additional context and background information, enriching the overall narrative in a way that might not have been possible within the primary story arcs.

Audio Gods of Risk narrated by Erik Davies

This novella returns us to the series’ roots, where interstellar events serve as a backdrop to the everyday lives of ordinary people. However, in this case, our “ordinary” protagonist is the remarkably gifted sixteen-year-old nephew of Bobbie Draper, raising questions about just how normal he truly is. He navigates the turbulent waters of adolescent angst while becoming entangled in the less savory aspects of life on Mars.

While the central character of this story is David, it also provides insight into Bobbie’s experiences during her brief “retirement” on Mars. It delves into the dynamics of the Draper family, offers a glimpse into Martian society, and explores another planet teetering on the precipice of the unknown as events in the broader system spiral out of control.

While this narrative is sure to be enjoyable for fans of the series, it’s not essential to the overarching storyline. Perhaps I’m not the intended gender or age demographic for this story to resonate with me fully, but Corey’s writing consistently captivates and entertains regardless.

David Draper serves as the central perspective character in this narrative, allowing us to perceive Bobbie through his eyes, much like we experience David’s brief foray into the world of drugs. This contrasts somewhat with how events unfold in the film series and doesn’t significantly impact the novels.

Primarily, the focus here is on David, with Bobbie playing only a minor role that holds little relevance to the broader story arc of the novels. It’s a decent read.
