Sadly this is one I should have skipped and halfway through I realized I didn’t care what happened and skipped to the last chapter. It is mostly sex of some sort up to 9 times a day and the cast of a thousand characters taking part. Jean Claude is an after thought and mostly there for sub plot, Richard is his usual whiny self and seems to just show up to throw temper tantrums and the main case could have been summed up in a paragraph. All in all there is a lot of whining brightness and ridiculous sex. In the maybe 4 days the 658 pages take place you have to wonder how this woman’s vejajay didn’t fall off!

Incubus Dreams audiobook in series Anita Blake
I have owned all of this series in hardback and am currently buying them on kindle. I have reread all the books up to this one and the sad point here is this is where Laurell K Hamilton ruined the series!!!!!!!!! The first books were really good up to the 5th book and then the series started getting a bit too off the rails. This one was the one that ruined all her previous good work. If you read the messages at the end of her books that she has added to the kindle and paperback versions, Mrs.Hamilton thanks that this is where she became a genius and could write any book better than a man or woman. She writes that no on could believe the way she could write an erotic book. Sorry, but this is not erotic. Plus, I’m not sure it is even a story. To me it seemed like Mrs. Hamilton needed some therapy and decided to try and write all her hang ups in this story as a way to say she didn’t have any but instead you just get a mess. In this kindle version there are 616 pages and I can tell you only about a 100 are worth reading. The rest is all about sex with different people to feed everyone’s power. This book debases any relationship that had been built before this. It makes it all about bumping bodies with no romance or real feeling in any of it. That is not erotic it’s boring and a waste of time. Mrs. Hamilton needed a good agent that could tell her she was ruining her entire body of work but doesn’t seem to have one. If you look at her reviews they didn’t start getting really bad until this book and since then you get a book worth reading in one of every 4 she publishes. If I tell anyone about her books I always tell them to read the reviews and if they are complaining about no story then skip that one until you find one that tells you have a story line in that book. I actually wish Mrs. Hamilton would allow another writer to take over because I am sure there is someone who could put this series back on track and make Anita and Jean Claude worth reading about again.

Incubus Dreams audiobook by Laurell K. Hamilton
Count me in…er, out. As others point out, the sex (and the talking about sex) has just reached ridiculous levels. I feel like I’m only getting 1/3 of a book, since I just skip over entire chapters. (When a chapter starts talking about sex or intimacy, I turn to the last page of the chapter. If the last sentence doesn’t describe some action or plot point, I skip to the next chapter and repeat the process. It is not unusual for me to skip two or three chapters at a time.) The problem with these chapters and sequences is that they contribute nothing. They are soft-core romance, offering no profound insights into any aspect of the protagonist’s behavior or the world in general. They are just there to take up space. I can only assume that they provide some titillation for other readers. I suppose this was inevitable when it reached the point where the author simply decided to make it a physical necessity for Anita to have sex every few hours. (This is NOT an exaggeration.) Anyway, I gave up.

Incubus Dreams audio narrated by Kimberly Alexis
Despite reviews of this book only being about sex, this was a great book. I have actually been waiting to finish this book so I could write a review for it.
In the past two months, I have read every Anita Blake book in order up to this one. I love that Anita has become more true to herself and started accepting who she was becoming. Yes, this book has a lot of sex. However, it fits in the story nicely. Its not sex scenes just for the sake of it. The intimacy she shares with her lovers shows how much she has grown as a person, not because shes having sex with so many partners, but because it has forced her to get comfortable with herself and her past.
I started reading Anita Blake novels when I was in my late teens, early twenties (so over 10 years ago- yikes!). I felt like a lot of people back then, that Hamilton was writing Anita Blake novels with too much sex and not enough plot. However, now that I am older and in a different stage in my life, I realize that is not so. By accepting her personal demon, sex, Anita is able to truly come into her power. She is learning to accept who and what she is. She is learning that yes, not everyone needs to fit into societys norms. It is great to just be you and figure yourself out, even if it doesnt fit in the normal box.

I loved the end of the book. I like when Anita is solving crimes, taking names and kicking ass. So the last 1/3 of the book was very fun. I like the way Hamilton writes sex scenes, oh my god it got old at the start of the book. I’m glad Anita isn’t as tortured by her desires but I didn’t need multiple episodes with all her BFs. Nice to have Richard back even when he is a bid baby. I’ll be readying the next installment. Hope it is more vampire and monster crime spree and less real house husbands of St Louis.
