Wow, this book was gripping, intense, and so true. Teens will love so much about this book and be sharing with their friends!!! Tony Abbott’s novel in verse about Bobby Lang who is called junk boy because he lives in a house that is definitely a hoarding situation to anyone who sees the cars, junk, thrown out items, strewn throughout and around the yard and house. Bobby’s dad is a drinker, doesn’t work and belittles his son daily. In school, Bobby tries to be invisible but one day, he is drawn into fighting going on in a classroom. What he finds changes his life; a mother is slapping and yelling at her daughter (because she is gay). Once she leaves, after angrily demeaning him, Bobby helps the girl hang up art posters—thus begins the weird relationship of Bobby and Rachel. Rachel becomes his friend, dragging him to art shows and telling him how much she hates her mother. But things are not always good between them, Rachel has anger issues, lashes out, and Bobby becomes her target too. As their friendship grows, Bobby begins to seek help for himself and Rachel. As both teens experience abuse, will they both be able to rise above and become better? Highly recommended!

“Junk Boy” is a beautifully rendered young adult novel in free verse about two teens who are made to feel as if they are outcasts by their families and peers because of their supposed “differences.” Bobby and Rachel begin a tentative friendship at school that blossoms into a complex, sometimes stormy meeting of the minds in which both see and support each other in ways no one else has. Although “junk” is used to describe both the clutter of Bobby’s surroundings at home and the cruel nickname given to him by his peers, there is no “junk” in the language of this story; Abbott’s spare verse is immersive and cinematic, and no words are wasted. Kudos for Abbott’s message of encouragement for teens to reach out for help when they need it from various sources like therapists, clergy and friends.

Audiobook Junk Boy by Tony Abbott

Bobby has long carried the guilt for his mother leaving. At least that’s what he hears on a daily basis from his father. When his father isn’t drunk, he is hobbling around on his bum leg and adding to the junk that surrounds their house in the woods.

Even though they live in the woods, everyone knows about the mess that surrounds their place. Bobby was nicknamed Junk Boy by his classmates long ago. He’s skinny and scrawny with a face he avoids looking at in the mirror at all costs. Teachers have let his father know Bobby is not dumb, just extremely quiet, and they extend their encouragement that he join some sort of after-school activity. Bobby’s father just laughs.

The day he witnesses a classmate named Rachel being slapped by her mother, he starts to compare his life at home with this artsy girl he also saw kissing another girl. When Rachel asks Bobby to help her hang some artwork, he discovers her amazing talent. She shares that she hates her mother and is hoping to be accepted at an art school in the city where she can live with her father.
