What absolute rubbish! The hunt for two notorious serial killers by Jack Daniels and her team. Konrath is obviously aiming his books at a rather unsophisticated audience. His attempt at humour is cringe worthy. Maybe his readership is mostly youngsters who have just reached puberty. He also goes all out to horrify and in so doing, his story becomes ridiculous fantasy. This is the last Konrath book I will ever read.

Last Call – A Thriller audiobook in series Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels Mysteries
Fantastic follow-up to the somewhat lesser Rum Runner, this tenth installment of the Jack Daniels series is a winner from the first page. A plethora of our favorite characters in this series all co-star as Jack must find Phin, who has gone off on his own to bring down the notorious and dangerous Luther Kite. Plenty of peril and intrigue and suspense but with the usual degree of dark comedy thrown in for good measure. Donaldson’s part in this book is total comic relief, and the always-running-at-the-mouth Harry McGlade made me laugh out loud at times. On the flip side, the dark and demented characters of Luther, Lucy, and their allies sober up the reader with their macabre and gut-wrenching tortures they perform on their captives. Numerous twists to the plot and unexpected situations combine for one heck of a great book. I especially liked the way the climax was written, as the perspectives from all the major players rapidly alternate as events unfold. I was completely taken by surprise by some of the things that happened toward the ending. I also admit I’m liking Jack’s character less and less over the past couple of books, and IMHO Katie nails it with her assessment of Jack near the climax. But that doesn’t take away from this tremendously good story…it’s gotta be at or near the top of the series. Loved it.

Audiobook Last Call – A Thriller by J. A. Konrath
Retired cop Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels has picked up a bunch of enemies over the years. Three archenemies remain, the worst of which is a serial killer named Luther Kite. Her husband Phin travels to Mexico to try kill him before he finds and kills Jack. Unfortunately, he is captured and forced to compete in horrible gladiator games run by Kite and a Mexican cartel. Now Jack and her friends have to rescue him before it is too late. All of the characters in the book are well-written and rounded. The serial killers are among the scariest I’ve ever read about. The author manages to have the reader cringing from the sadism and cruelty of the psychopathic serial killers then laughing out loud at the next page from the antics of the McGlade character. The author writes in the preface that this book is the latest in a series, but can be enjoyed without having read any of the other books. I am pleased to say that she is right, but having read this book, my appetite is wetted to go read every other book in the series. Highly Recommended.

Audio Last Call – A Thriller narrated by Dick Hill Susie Breck
3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. I enjoyed reading this book in the Jack Daniels series. I\’m sad that some recurring characters die(mentioned in the foreword). Herb Benedict and Harry McGlade still have some laugh out loud lines. Jack is on a rescue mission in this book. There is some graphic violence and this is not a cozy mystery. Two quotes: Conversation between Jack and Harry : \”What\’s your take on Katie Glente? Harry shrugged.\’I\’d hit that.\’ \’You\’d hit anything with two t### and a pulse.\’ \’Not true. The pulse is optional. And so are t###\” \”How did anything at all get done in Phoenix? What fool thought it was a smart idea to build a city in the middle of a desert?\” I purchased this book from Amazon.

I don’t know what I can say about JA Konrath that I haven’t said before. He creates such a great assortment of wackos and heroes that you got to love his stories. In Last Call, he brings them all (including Crouch’s psychos) together to deliver a one-two punch that was just pure fun. Anyone who has read his previous Jack Daniels stories will love this one (the tie-in to past history was also terrific). Reading JA Konrath tales is like spending your evening binge watching a combination of Lethal Weapon with some Saw, a touch of The Three Stooges, and a whole lot of House of a Thousand Corpses. ENJOY!!!!!
