Not a fun read. Very preachy and characters are shallow in thinking and philosophy. Even with new characters there’s no serious character development and there’s too much smug to enjoy the dialog. Author seems to have lost the imagination to say anything new and is falling back on the latest social justice religious-copycat doctrines and verbiage. With all the violence we’ve seen lately this reads in the beginning like the rant of a terrorist but it doesn’t make any sense as the villains are so shallow they appear as caricatures and there’s no catharsis when they go away or die. I’ll delete this from my Kindle and pretend the previous book was the last in the series. Good luck slogging through it.

Past Due audiobook in series Good Intentions
I haven’t finished this book, and I’m not certain I will. Right now (after 4 days of trying to read it) I’m just past the point where Wade has declared himself Asexual, and Drew is now Bi-sexual. My only question is: Who F’in cares? Does this add something to the overall story? NO. So why bother adding it? I think the last thing I read was of Onyx speaking to Lorelei in the hallway. I can’t remember what the conversation was about this morning because I just didn’t care. The non-stop social commentary in these books is getting pretty pathetic. Somehow the author came to believe his view of the world is more important than writing a STORY. Get over yourself, man. You write some fine prose, but you are not the bright bulb you believe yourself to be. Just stick to writing fiction, please, and keep your opinions to yourself.
The characters Alex, Lorelei and Rachel are not what they once were. There is no spontaneity, no humor (Rachel’s going off is as flat as a pancake now), no real character development, and no freaking story that I can see. I’ve seen where some reviewers were upset that Lorelei was getting it on with other men… and I ask: So what? She is a Succubus. You knew from book 1 that it was going to happen. Another angel hitting on Rachel? So? She is a hottie, and angels get horny, as well. She turned the guy down and as far as I know she remains faithful to Alex – even though she only gets a fraction of the love Lorelei gets. That’s just wrong. . Molly now loves Alex? Did I read that correctly, or was I nodding off? Onyx marries a guy… just because? Did that happen? Does it matter? The relationships in this story line have grown beyond absurd. There is far too much yakking about nothing, and far too little moving forward.
I’ve read 4 books since putting this one down several days ago. Each time I think of returning and picking up where I left off I find a reason to read something else. I don’t have to work at finding a reason to avoid this mess.

Audio Past Due narrated by Tess Irondale
Don’t agree with someone’s opinion? Assault them. No consequences for your actions. Besides that main point which was hard to overcome in the first two chapters, this book was all over the place. I don’t know what happened to the story or his writing in general but it was hard believe this book was written by the same who wrote Poor Man’s War.

Overall, I want to like this book. I do. I’ve supported this author for many years by purchasing his works. A long time ago, some of us encouraged him on another site that he should turn Alex’s story into a book. Now…I don’t know.
He’s entitled to his political opinions as are we all. From the author’s standpoint that would assume you are on the “correct” side. If you make it past the initial chapters you will find a story that betrays the core of Alex (or as we knew him in previous books). The turn is immediate and jarring. It makes little sense, it adds absolutely nothing to the story. Literally nothing. Previous critiques are also correct — there are too many characters, too many subpoints/plots that detract from the overall picture. It is a work of unnecessary excess. If the author is his own editor he should immediately fire himself and hire one to rein that excess in.
i’m not entirely sure this book was worth the money. If you have the throwaway money, feel free to throw it here I suppose. But there are most likely better books on Amazon to read for that price point and in the same genre.
As for the author, I would suggest watching Rob Reiner’s The American President movie with its closing speech by Michael Douglas. I don’t agree with Rob Reiner/Aaron Sorkin on much of anything but that dialogue on American citizenship and defending one’s rights to express themselves regardless of your stance on it, should be taught and emphasized in classrooms. i think the original Alex would have thought so as well.
