Running the Maze

Not worth the price. I won\’t be buying another novel in this series until the price comes down . . . to about $3.99. While I enjoy the story lines (I\’ve read five books in this series so far), the writing is juvenile, at best . . . and as such, not worth the premium price. If Jack is listening, y\’all really need a better editor. I like the characters, especially Kyle and Sybelle, but there\’s just waaaay too much formulaic writing going on here . . . almost as if the author is simply pumping out more books to make money than being interested in crafting a well-written story. It\’s painfully obvious that the writer is of a mature age . . . many passages are reminiscent of stilted, old-school stuff. Which is not bad, in and of itself, but the use of antiquated terms and phrases just seems clumsy and, well, cheap. Again, the story lines are fun and there\’s enough action to suit . . . it\’s just not very well written . . . and certainly not worth the price, IMHO. Rated \’OK\’ because it\’s not that I didn\’t like it . . . it\’s just that unless the writing/editing improves or the price drops dramatically, I won\’t be buying any more of these books.

Trident, General Middleton, forces a beautiful Coastguard sniper onto Kyle to take into a hostile situation to find out what happened to her brother. While there was a bit of interbranch rivalry and not just a little prejudice by Kyle, He finally comes around to respect the abilities of this vivacious young sniper. \”Coastie,\” as she is nicknamed, earns the respect of not only Kyle, but the whole Trident team and they end up saving each other\’s lives in a fast and furious shoot out in enemy territory to keep a terrorist threat at bay.

Jack Coughlin and Donald Davis have combined to create a very entertaining series. They carefully structure each of the 5 books I\’ve read so that a reader can enjoy them independently. Running the Maze is like the first four in the series–very exciting and well written. Running the Maze takes place in Pakistan and centers on a new terrorist group to take Osama bin Laden\’s place.

Plenty of action and enough technical correctness for a pairing to make an enjoyable read. Plot line was a bit less intricate than some others of the genre, but still an enjoyable read.

Book number 5 was what I had hoped it would be…Gysgt Kyle Swanson is American\’s silent hero…and because of him we can sleep in peace at night…??
