Some authors talk about racism in their books and then some stress on the issue of class difference. These two issues have been plaguing the human race for centuries and have remained the cause of social injustice since the beginning. Kiley Reid talks about both of these issues in her first novel. Alix Chamberlain in the novel is presented as a woman of the upper class; also she is a lady with white skin. On the other hand, the babysitter in her house named Emira Tucker is a black girl who belongs to a low profiled family. Alix was never a racist mentally so she never had an issue with keeping a black woman in the house to take care of her only child.

Emira was also friendly with the child and the whole family; she used to take the child on a market trip whenever the parents weren’t home. One day Emira was on her usual trip with the child when all of a sudden a person accused her of kidnapping a white baby.
The police came but the problem was soon solved when Alix came to the scene. Emira was not arrested or punished but this incident had a great impact on her mind and soul for the rest of her life. Her health started deteriorating and she made herself isolated from the world.
After many years another incident brings Emira and Alix close to each other once again and this time both of them need each other’s help. Nicole Lewis has done the narration for this beautiful book about social issues and injustice in society.
