For some reason I keep lowering my expectations for Feist, and he keeps surprising me with original, fun, and captivating stories. While he’s taken a lot of grief for riding his Riftwar horse for so long, I say ‘Why Not?’. If he’s able to continue expanding and re-energizing his existing world with new ideas, characters, and settings (as he has successfully done so far), his fans will keep coming back for more, and there is little to discourage him from keeping with the Riftwar universe.
This book stars Nicholas, son of Arutha, in a coming of age story similar to what Borric experienced in
. Here, Nicholas finds himself involved in a grand adventure on the open seas trying to rescue prinsoners from reavers that struck the Western cost of the Kingdom of the Isles. He has a great array of companions, old and new, that keep the story fun and exciting. Familiar faces include Amos, Nakor, Ghuda, and Pug, while some great new characters include Harry, Brisa, and Nicholas himself. Like many of Feist’s books, this is a story of a young man maturing and overcoming challenges. Most of this book takes place on the unknown continent of Novindius, where the Pantathian’s have gained power and have taken aim at Nicholas’ homeland. While less epic than
, this is still a great book with a powerful story to tell. Highly recommended for fans of the series.

Audiobook The King’s Buccaneer (Krondor’s Sons #2) by Raymond E. Feist
Part of Feist’s Midkemia series, set after the Magician series but before “all hell actually breaks loose!”.
I enjoyed the different viewpoint of the main characters and as always enjoyed the action. In these earlier stories Feist usually brought each story to a satisfactory conclusion, so that it did not really matter if you picked up the series again from a different set of stories or even from a different series. They all sat together and made sense.
This is a complete story of the “Boys own Annual” style or “Road trip” style. Lots of action, lots of fun and good honest heroes trying to make a life for themselves.
My Husband and I both read Feist and we both enjoyed this one.

Audio The King’s Buccaneer (Krondor’s Sons #2) narrated by Peter Joyce
Outside of a few plot holes and a few occurrences of clunky diaogue- overall a great “stand alone” novel by the author who gave us the amazing Riftwar trilogy.
While it does benefit reading the prior riftwar books… I feel that is not a requirement to still enjoy this one…The characters are fantastic and I loved the whole mystery and journey into the unknown aspects of this book.
I just regret the main character Nicholas- who turns out to be one of my favorite Feist characters- does not get further developed in following books and ends up having a rather (in my opinion) weak and unfugilling story arc in the Serpent War saga.

I adore this story, and this entire series, but the narrator for the audiobook was excruciating. All the names were pronounced in absolutely bizarre ways (such as pronouncing Tomas as Toe-Mass). The accents were done badly, and it distracted a great deal from the storytelling. I probably wouldnt purchase another audiobook read by this narrator.
