Drake is moving fast and though he has given us the Peace of Amiens, just by that title we know that the battles between Cinnabar and the Alliance will resume momentarily. It is what happens in between that we are now concerned with and with jumps of logic that Conan Doyle would find familiar, we see a glimpse that Drake assures he has gotten from ancient sources as a guideline.
Yet our heroes Mundy and Leary seem to be able to piece together information that we do not even know about. That seems to be the fault here. That and Drake breaking apart the tale into two streams. Leary seems to have a little James T Kirk need to be the only officer to do anything, which as we know from being fans of Star Trek is very egotistical.
While Leary seems to have more development than Honor Undefeatable Herrington, still a Captain does not solo and no logic really gets around that. It is also time, being book 9, that Leary needs to see more branches from his tree. His officers seem to stick, instead of go off to do their own thing. All are rich from prize money. None have a shore life, because even with the peace, the Sissies seem to have too little down time to have lives.
That should be explored more in this series that has developed into years of in storyline time bending. And then, will the Napoleon of the series and the Britain develop allies such as Prussia, Russia, Austria so that they have large navies as well to provide balance to the Europe of the world of Lt. Leary?
Those questions need to be addressed to give better background. It seems far too much as if each book Drake decides that there is a new problem so an entire new quadrant is placed in the Universe without regard to what has gone before. At such a rate, Leary will never conclude his career, and can have a life of a thousand years before the war will ever truly finish.
That is what causes me to withhold the highest praise for the series. That the challenges may change slightly, but in the end they are becoming far too similar from book to book.

The Road of Danger audiobook in series RCN Series
I loved the first 4 or 5 RCN books but they’ve really run out of steam. First of all the plots are not as good as they used to be. They’re less suspenseful than the ones in the early books. I think this is because David Drake is trying harder to make his plots conform to historical battles than to come out of the conflicts of the characters. The characters, themselves are becoming far more one dimensional. Drake says over and over that Mundy lacks socialization and her servant is a psychopath. First of all those of us who’ve followed the series know that, but even if we didn’t, there’s no reason to repeat it over and over throughout the book. When I think about the original book when Leary and Mundy met, we got to know what kind of people they are through their actions. Now Drake just keeps repeating lists of their character traits instead of showing them through their actions. I will probably carry on reading the series anyway, but David Drake, if you happen to read this, would you please go back to what you used to do. You used to write character driven stories. Your books are somewhat like Patrick O’Brians books and one thing he did well is have his characters develop over the many years in which his series took place. I think part of what’s wrong with the RCN series now is that the characters remain exactly the same. Initially they changed from their interactions with each other, but now they are frozen and don’t develop further from their experience. It would be nice if the characters aged, learned from their experiences, grew up over the years.

Audio The Road of Danger narrated by David Drake
I have all the Leary/Adele books and love them all.
Leary, Hogg, Adele, Tovera and the crew of the Princess Cecile once again are give a crappy assignment. Jesus. Do they get any other kind??
Of course the admiral who assigns them to this crappy assignment acts like an idiot. Well he is an admiral. Leary has no choice but to take the assignment. Oh and what an assignment.
Find some bozo on a backwater world. Said bozo is supposed to be a freedome fighter.
Leary and Adele split up on this one. Leary as a RNC Lt on half pay looking for a berth. Of course the birth is well targeted. The Savoy is headed exactly where Daniel needs to go. Big surprise.
Adele, using her upper class upbringing is masquerading as a lady with a warship. The Princess Cecile and the crew are her warship and she’s putting herself out there as someone who can be bought for a price.
We have pirates, one freedom fighter, loads of murderers who kinda sorta highjacked the feedom thingy.
We have Daniel damned near killing himself slipping in and out of the matrix when chased by a ship with an astrogater damned near as good as he is. Thank God Hogg was there to make sure Daniel didn’t kill himself on the hull or drop from exhaustion.
We also have Adele pulling it off as a snotty Lady with a warship thats available for a price.
Just another good one from Drake and I can hardly wait for the next adventure with Daniel and Adele.

I’m going to have to disagree with other reviewers who have not been pleased with this volume of this series. When you follow the natural progression of the series then you have to accept that Mundy’s role as an intelligence agent will play a major role at some point. Drake’s ability to bring that forward without minimizing the roles of other characters is, in my opinion, a testament to his writing ability. There is as usual a mix of ground and space action only with a bit of James Bond type spy thriller thrown in as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys space opera with a bit of intrigue thrown in.
You get the sense that David Drake is writing these to a formula that barely varies. When you’ve read one you really have read them all (in very great contrast to the Aubrey Maturin series they homage, and utterly unlike Drake’s better work.)
