The Unruly City: London, Paris, and New York in the Age of Revolution

I’m always looking for alternative ways to view history. This very readable book explores revolutionary events in Paris, London and New York from an interest in public buildings and areas.

I would have preferred that the book included illustrations.

Interesting historical account, filled with details didn’t make it into the courses I took in American and European History.

This is a very interesting book which combines history with aspects of the cityscape of the three cities studied. For me, the most interesting is New York because I walk past many of the locations mentioned several times a week. I think that anyone with an interest in the American and French Revolutions will find this a great and informative read. People acquainted with New York, London or Paris will also enjoy this book, I hope as much as I did.

What a fascinating idea that the author has come up with these tri-city sagas on what he calls “Revolutions.” In Chapter 10 he plunges into the very heart of the Revolution to ferret out the yet unknown minutiae of Parisians on the street during the turbulent period. Parisians had to wear the compulsory tricolor cockade for fear of falling victims to chocolatier Pauline Leon and actress Claire Lacombe of the Society of Revolutionary Republican Party and to the searching eyes of the sans-culotttes. The discords between Richard Pierce and the old-fashioned Edmund Burke on the “half a dozen grasshoppers” are good indicators of the contrasting aspects of revolutions in the two countries bordering on the Dover Narrows.

I just heard him interviewed on the radio. It sounds like a very interesting book! Looking forward to getting it.
