Who are You, Calvin Bledsoe?

“Quirky, wacky, depths of the human heart…” all those words in the reviews persuaded me to purchase this book which hasn’t been to my taste at all, lol. It moves fairly slowly with an immature young man trailing along in an aimless journey through Europe with a complete stranger claiming to be his aunt who feeds him stories about his deceased parents supposed immoralities, robbing relics as they go which could land him in jail as accomplice if she doesn’t frame him if they are caught which she is clever and amoral enough to do. She seemingly has no loyalities. His parents were people who had great reputations and due to the sociopathic personality of this aunt the reader is left wondering if the stories are even true since she lies and messes with people’s minds so freely. Besides she has already tricked him once into thinking his house was sold, through fabricating printed published evidence. He doesn’t even question the truth later when she presents another news article stating his home burned down. His complete unquestioning following of her and inability to understand she is a sociopath, and terrible judgement in his almost publishing inappropriate childish things in his work blog that no normal person would even consider publishing as they’d be immediately fired….Without the apparently very strong lead of his recently deceased mother Calvin Bledsoe seems to have no moral rudder at all. I guess that is colorful and amusing, but I got tired of his foolishness by the early 200s. His undying optimism that perhaps this aunt is his real mom and cares for him is his driving force. I’d hoped for a different kind of mystery rather than a lecture of sorts on too strict and sheltering of a moral upbringing….it sounded like there’s be international intrigue in the sales pitch of this book but I got bored with the aimless European wandering with only internal processes happening, following in the junior high like mind of this bereaved man in his 40s. Not enough descriptions of the places in Europe they visited to help make up for the gaps when nothing is really happening in the story line. There is a mild amount of suspense when you wonder if she will be caught but I predict she disappears at some point and he goes home to find his house still standing and life goes on…

I have not finished reading it. I may not. It’s an okay book, just not my cup of tea.

This novel was amusing, but ultimately unsatisfying. A young man who was controlled by his mothers religious teachings his whole life finally grows up.

A well written, fun different kind of mystery.

A far fetching story. Disjointed characters.
