Wish You Well audiobook

At its core, this narrative explores the profound bond between a mother and her daughter. From the very beginning, their relationship is portrayed as estranged, and remarkably, it remains so throughout the entirety of the story. Through the power of love, the tale illustrates how expressing affection can aid in the healing process, especially when confronted with illness. Additionally, the story beautifully exemplifies the strength of love within a community, showcasing how it can uplift and support individuals. As an added element, it briefly touches upon the aftermath of the Great Depression in the mountains of Virginia, providing a glimpse into the historical context.

Audio Wish You Well narrated by Norma Lana

Wish You Well sets itself apart from the majority of David Baldacci’s books, known for their thrilling nature. This particular work, however, deviates from that pattern. While a veil of sinister events simmers just beneath the surface, both metaphorically and literally, at its core, this is a tale of love and family. I found myself moved to tears on multiple occasions, particularly towards the conclusion.

The story revolves around twelve-year-old Lou Cardinal in the year 1936, when tragedy befalls her family. A devastating accident claims her father’s life and renders her mother speechless, reduced to a mere shell of her former self. Consequently, Lou, her mother, and her brother, Oz, are sent to live with their great-grandmother on a rustic farm nestled in the mountains of Virginia.

Life on the farm is marked by arduous labor for Lou and Oz. With minimal modern comforts, their daily existence demands relentless toil for food, clothing, and everything else. Alongside the children, Louisa, the grandmother after whom Lou is named, has two enigmatic helpers — a man named Eugene, who is of African descent, and a boy who goes by the name Diamond, whose true nature and affiliations remain uncertain. Diamond appears to answer to no one and moves about freely, yet he appears whenever there is a substantial task at hand. In rare moments of respite, he takes Lou and Oz on explorations beyond the farm’s confines.

Cotton Longfellow, a lawyer by profession from a nearby town, occasionally lends a helping hand. He not only volunteers to read to Lou’s traumatized mother, hoping to reawaken her dormant self, but also takes it upon himself to supervise the children during their visits to town. At times, he assists with farm chores as well.

Although Lou and Oz find themselves toiling harder than ever before, it becomes evident that Louisa harbors deep affection for them, a sentiment reciprocated swiftly by the young siblings. However, further misfortunes loom on the horizon, some far from accidental, unlike the incident that claimed their father’s life. The courtroom drama that unfolds towards the end of the story is nothing short of mesmerizing.
